davjbeas July 9, 2008 Author Share July 9, 2008 For now I am staring at the tank whenever I get a chance. Hoping to see something. The are no clicking noises. But I'm not ruling out a mantis shrimp. David B.
CHUBAKAH July 11, 2008 Share July 11, 2008 Are you sure the fish didn't jump? Do you have the top covered?
davjbeas July 12, 2008 Author Share July 12, 2008 Are you sure the fish didn't jump? Do you have the top covered? That was the first thing I checked. There are no bodies. Top is not covered. I prefer open top tanks for better oxygen exchange. David
davelin315 July 12, 2008 Share July 12, 2008 Hey Dave, with a clean up crew and the lps in there, it's possible that bodies were consumed without leaving a trace... By the way, I don't have a whole lot of experience with mantis shrimp, but I am assuming that you may not hear the clicking or thumping if you have a spearer, which is more likely to attack your fish than the smashers, which could explain why your clean up crew is still there. In any case, you never know what could have taken them out until you find it, I suggest a trap of some sort to see what it comes up with. The cleaner shrimp's demise could be explained by a predatory shrimp, as well.
davjbeas July 22, 2008 Author Share July 22, 2008 First a question. Can fire shrimp catch and eat purple fire fish or pipe fish? Here is my trap. It is basically a plastic bottle cut and put together using aquarium silicone to keep it together I am expecting to catch at least bristleworms and maybe hermits. Here it is in the tank with 2 cubes of prime reef for the bait. We will see what happens David B.
fishcam July 22, 2008 Share July 22, 2008 We will see what happens David B. I'd be interested if this catches bristle worms...
davjbeas October 26, 2008 Author Share October 26, 2008 Maybe it would catch worms but the opening is too slippery maybe for the worms to get in. Here's an update. Added - Citron goby scooter blenny 3 peppermint shrimp Galaxea frogspawn bubble metallic green open brain some violet, purple, green shrooms Here are the pics. Every thing is happy, I am feeding Rods Reef food every night, skimming heavey No additives water change 2x/month I might try adding some firefish again later on. David B. sde219 October 28, 2008 Share October 28, 2008 I really like the rockwork you setup at the beginning. Made the 30 look larger than it is. It looks great for placing corals and providing plenty of open space. Can you post a new Full Tank Shot? Any verdict on what was killing your fish? No, I waited a good while before adding the citron goby after the fire fish disappeared. Whatever it was isn't happening again. David
