SteveD April 11, 2008 Share April 11, 2008 What exactly are you looking for? Do you want a quick pocket sized point and click, a Digital SLR, or something in between? If you want digital SLR then the D40 is the way to go as people said. For point and click: I recommend the Cannon Powershot SD1000 or SD750. I've got the 1000 and it is great for point and click photography. It is easy to use, but you don't get much control. Note that the 750 is actually a more advanced model despite the lower number. There are also some newer Powershot models that might be better, but I've not done research. I've also got a waterproof case for my SD1000. It was nice to have when I went snorkeling and to the beach on a recent cruise. This is the waterproof case that I've got: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-WP-DC13-Waterp...d_sim_e_title_5
steveoutlaw April 11, 2008 Author Share April 11, 2008 (edited) Well, after reading a TON of reviews on the different point and click cameras, I decided to go with the Panasonic DMC-FZ18K (Thanks for the recommendation Erik). FWIW, I got the camera, battery charger, battery pack, lens cap, lens hood, lens hood adapter, AV cable, USB connection cable, strap, case, and a 1GB memory card for $298 shipped. darn good price for what you get. Here is the link of where I got it: http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/495772405 Edited April 11, 2008 by steveoutlaw

Boret May 10, 2008 Share May 10, 2008 BUMP!! Any comments on the price for the Nikon D40 at COSTCO? Is it a good deal? They have 2 kits: $549 LINK D40 body, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR Lens, 2GB ATP 80x SD Card and, 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR Lens $599 LINK D40 body, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR Lens, 2GB ATP 80x SD Card and, 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR Lens with optical image stabilization $15 S/H for either one. Is it worth the extra $50 to get the different 55-200mm lens? I have no experience with D SLRs and I appreciate any help/advice.
