SCWD water return at TRT...

They got about 4 of them in from what I saw on wednesday when I went in there...Anyone heard of these?  There is a big discussion about them a Reef Central.

It is a water return device that has one inlet and 2 outlets in a sort of "T".  The water goes back and forth from one side to the other and is supposed to work great, especially for the low price, don't know how much TRT is selling them for though.  If anyone tries one of these guys out let us know...I would really like to hear from someone who has one.  I might be splitting a line with my refugium with one of these and the new eheim 1260 pump.  I think I'd get decent flow.

Anyways just blabbing again,

I've had one of these in my 90 gal for a couple of weeks and I like it a lot.  I am feeding it with a Mag 9.5.  I ran one of the outlets to the front corner of the tank and the other to the opposite rear corner.  I am getting beautiful pulsating flow.  It switches gradually between the outlets about every 15 seconds (varies with flow rate).  It is totally silent.  I was able to pull out a couple of unsightly powerheads.  I don't know how it will hold up over the long run, but it is pretty cheap (compared to anything else in this hobby).

Thanks for the reply...

So it switches every 15 seconds with a mag950 run at full flow?

Guest reefnut

Yes, it cycles every 15 seconds with my Mag 9.5 wide open and about 6 feet of 3/4" PVC to each outlet.   The transition is nice and smooth.  Very natural.

I am going to TRT to check it out today.  I have a Mag12 tee off to 2 of my returns.  If this thing can handle the Mag12 then I might try one for the return so I can get a little bit more of a random current in my tank.

The only thing that I am worry about is this going to be on my main return.  If some thing doesn't work right then it might shut down my main tank current completely.  We will see.

I believe they can handle up to 1400 gph so the mag1200 would work perfect I'd think.

i think they go for about 50.00 dollars and you can also get them at www.championlighting.com

How the heck do these things connect to your pump?  With flex line and clamps?  I can't quite figure it out from looking at it- have yet to see a dimension for pipe fittings???  3/4" inside the pipe or over top of it???

I believe it's just the 3/4 inch tubing you get at homedepot...without the braides...I have heard that the bradied tubing doesn't fit very well over these.  I am guessing that would be inner diameter...I opened one up at TRT...its just like a big T connector for vinyl tubing.

Here's the big discussion on it at reefcentral...some posts show pics of how people set them up.

You just use 3/4" ID clear tubing and hose clamps.  I used PVC for everything but the last foot or so going into and out of the SCWD.  I figured the rigid pipe would have less pressure loss.

I would think both PVC and vinyl tubing offer the same drag, which equates to loss.  In fact, I would think vinyl tubing would offer less total loss, because you would need less 90s and 45s, as the vinyl tubing pretty flexible.
