For my upcoming tank, I'm going to need an electrical subpanel. I've been mulling over how exactly and when to do it. Well my tank delivery date got pushed back a month, so now's the time.

Obviously, it's not the most difficult thing to do myself, but it probably requires a bit of know-how, experience and caution.... so I was wondering if I should even try to do this myself?

I'm thinking of adding a subpanel with 4 - 20 amp circuits.

I had a subpanel and outlets put in to handle a basement workshop up in NY and it was $500. I like to stay away from the breakers myself but am cool with adding outlets and dimmers and such.

Thanks for the info. $500 is not bad at all.

But for some reason I think my setup might be a bit more expensive. I think I would need to run the line from my main breaker to the future subpanel's location outside in pvc conduits. This is because both rooms where the main panel is and where the future subpanel will be are finished.

I'll probably get a few quotes first, and go from there.

If you're running PVC conduit, just do it yourself. The electrical PVC conduit is more or less the same as the stuff we use for our tanks and if you know how to do it so it's waterproof from the inside out you can certainly do it so that it's waterproof from the outside in! Depending on where you run it from, though, you may need to get Dominion Power to come out and do it for you. I'm still trying to get someone to come out and do mine in my basement as well...

If you need the main line run and buried that will definitely be more. It's really not terribly hard but if you've never messed around in an electric panel before it can be a bit daunting. I've installed the subpanel for my tank and I've changed a whole house panel so if you need some help I can at least provide some pointers if you're interested.
