B-Fit August 17, 2007 August 17, 2007 At what flow rate will a 25w UV sterilizer be effective in killing off parasites? I'm trying to determine what size pump I will need for a pentair which is rated for 760gph max flow. It will be hooked up to a 125g with a 55g sump. Thanks
Grav August 17, 2007 August 17, 2007 Check with the maker, and lean toward the lower end of the range they suggest for a saltwater tank. Each one is different. I run about 200 GPH though the one on my QT tanks.

For now, I have a mag 7 connected to it but I'm looking to connect a mag 3 soon. I can't seem to find anywhere the optimal gph/watt ratio for parasite death. Well, thats the plan for now.

What brand is it? I run my Coralife 18w around 90-100gph. That's what they recommend for their UV. I'm going to guess that a Mag 3 is going to be too much.

Look harder.... http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article....423&aid=440 There are several charts like this available. Keep in mind though your bulb will lose 25% efficiency within the first 2 months of use. It is common thinking to run 1/2 the recommended GPH through the unit to account for the bulbs wear and tear over the course of a year. So basically your looking at 75gph. Since this is less than 1x your system volume it means the sterilizer you have is undersized for your system. To get the full benefits of UV you are going to need something along the lines of a 40w minimum for parasite control.
