Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 I need to add more flow to my 54 corner bowfront. Currently I've got the return coming back in via a SCWD but the SCWD is taking a lot out. I'm definiclty not getting enough movement throughout the tank - this will be an SPS only tank. I need to add more flow but - Minimize visible equipment - Decent bang for the buck I've been thinking about adding a tunze 6060 to the back corner - it'll stream current to the front glass, which, due to the shape, will direct the current to almost all portions of the tank. But I've got two concerns. 1) It'll be too much flow - got fine sand though its a shallow sand bed. 2) It wont be chaotic enough. The other possible solution would be to add a couple of MJ1200s and a wavemaker but I'd rather go with the stream if it'll work out well. Your opinions? HowardofNOVA January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 First question? What size pump are you using? I would recommend at least a Mag7, but a 9.5 would probably be better. My Mag12 is going through the SCWD and switching about every 4 seconds. I also a 900gph Powerhead behind the rocks in the corner to keep the back clear and 2 -250gph ph in front, though I'm looking to do a close loop after I move the tank hopefully later this month. Also, what do you have plans on putting in the tank? Oops, you mentioned SPS. missed that. Howard
Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 I'm using an Eheim 1262 - 900GPH at 0 head - about 760GPH at 4 ft of head according to the charts. But that SCWD is killing it! I'm definitly not getting that much flow. SCWD switches directions about every 6-7 seconds I think.
HowardofNOVA January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 Sounds about right, IMO your getting 10x tank rollover per hr. Which is good, now to jump it up, add another pump maybe in either the same range or step up with another SCWD in a closed loop? Surfs Up! Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 13, 2005 Share January 13, 2005 I'm switching that Eheim 1262 out with a QuietOne 6000. ~1500 gph at 0 head. Should perform better
ireland January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 You could try switching out the SCWD for a Sea Swirl. I think there are 2 different people selling them right now for good prices.
flowerseller January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 The stream is a great product, I have one, but you can get about 12 - MJ1200 for the same money, or just get a couple and some money for something else.
Guest greatwit January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 I've been using the 600 gph model of one of these Seio pumps for about a month and have been pretty happy with it. They also come in a 800 and 1100 gph models. Much cheaper too.
Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 I'm going to switch out the pump this weekend and see how that turns out. Does that SEIO pump 'sweep' ?
ctreptow January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 No they don't sweep. My Seio seized up after 2 months but Seio replaced the impeller for me and it seems to be working fine now. I like the flat water movement and will be adding 2 more 1100's when I can find them. Chris
Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 14, 2005 Share January 14, 2005 Anyone else use a sea swirl? " I think there are 2 different people selling them right now for good prices." Who?
Guest Ghazanfar Ghori January 16, 2005 Share January 16, 2005 Switched the Eheim with a QuietOne 6000 - 1500 GPH. Put the Eheim on a closed loop, with the output split into two streams. Had to cut out a few larger teeth in the overflow but now i gots FLOW!

The Quite One pump might be more pressure/flow then the SCWD can handle long term. 1200 at 0' is about max. from what I've been reading. I would go with a seaswirl on a closed loop with a corner tank. George
