Can I break the tank divider off?

My 36" long tank have a divider sitting in the middle on top of the tank. I think it will block my light that go into the tank. my question is can i remove it and the tank wont fall apart?

It won't effect your lighting very much so I would leave it.

The obvious reason it is there is for structural reasons, in less the glass is less than 1/4" and no top support, I believe it won't hurt!
