who here uses wavemakers?

i just bought one off RC for $10. It's a natural wavemaker powerstrip. What are the benefits of these things? Do the "high flow" corals adapt to this or what?

The idea behind wave makers is that you do not want the same flow all the time in your aquarium. In the wild high/low tide, eddies and swirls make for a farily chaotic system of flow which seems to benefit corals.

A wavemake like the one your purchased will turn powerheads on and off on some cycle attempt to create this random flow.

There are other ways as well (moving powerheads/returns, pumps that regulate how much they are pumping instead of on/off, etc).

I got one from ebay a few months ago for $8. It push the water all over the tank in alternate current and really help a lot- helps corals with circulation and aldo, give more natural look like actual environment in reef.

You can basically run any powerheads with the strip as long combined wattage isn't above 100 for each controlled sockets.

Most people go with maxi-jet 1200, they're practically designed for wavemaking appliance. Don't use tunze, seio, and rio- they're not designed for hard stop/start which the strip do.

I've been using the same wave maker 14years.

Works great and doesn't take up any DC8 slots.

I use 4 Gemini pumps on it which are similar to a tunze turbelle but move 950gph each.

Mine is a Rocon SurgeMaster which is a random on/off controlable unit.

Not recommended to plug an Iron into the unit'g plug though.

currently have 3 maxi 1200's on it. I just don't think thats enough flow for my 125. I will be upgrading the return to (2) mag 9.5's with 2 lock line returns on each overflow. Maybe that will help.

I use 4 maxi jet 1200's on a red Sea wavemaster pro, and although they seem to have a bad reputation, mine works great. Even after I managed to drop it into my sump while still plugged in (oops!) I just dried it out, cleaned it, and it started working again no problem.

someday when I hit the lottery, I will be buying a tunze setup...

I feel like a total duffus because I'm raking my brain about what's the name of the two new tunzes I also have a tunze controller.

What are they called........... the name is completely escaping me.
