jamal February 10, 2007 February 10, 2007 i have alot of cyano on the back wall of my tank and on a few of my snails. what options are available to me? i heard of something called chemi clean but what ae some long term solutions. i was thinking of getting a phosphate reactor. according to my lfs my phosphate levels are at 0.01 so why am i having these problems?
HowardofNOVA February 10, 2007 February 10, 2007 If they are on the glass, scrape them off and suck out with a hose and sock on end draining into sump as you go. Do a water change also If you use the Phosban Reactor, remember to use sparingly at first and don't run full blast right away! Can clean the water TOO fast!! Also I highly recommend getting a Blue Neon Striped Hermits. BEST their is for the Red Stuff!! If your interested I have 3 in my tank and could part with one for $10? LMK?
jamal February 10, 2007 Author February 10, 2007 crabs wont do much good as its all on the back wall of the aquarium with no way for crabs to get to most of it. i will do a water change or two as i see it needs to be handled before it gets out of hand
davelin315 February 10, 2007 February 10, 2007 Cyano will feed off of more than simply phosphates, although those are typically a trigger for their growth. They eat any crud in the water, really, and their presence can be related to many different factors. Besides your water quality, you'll want to check out: age and quality of lighting lighting cycle itself water flow feeding regimen Basically, the wrong spectrum of lighting or insufficient lighting (can be a factor of bulb age) coupled with insufficient flow allowing detritus to not only settle but to build up and become a water quality factor (this includes food) will all encourage cyanobacteria to grow. Also, since it's a photosynthetic bacteria, it's not as easily conquered as a true algae. Can it be beat? Sure, but you have to be diligent in correcting the factors that allowed it to grow in the first place.
jamal February 11, 2007 Author February 11, 2007 i bought a phosban reactor today that i just started running. i did a water change and will increase there frequency in the near future. i have decreased my lighting cycle but my bulbs are fairly new. i have only had the lights since late october so i should be ok for now on the replacement issue. i dont know about bulb quality but i will be replacing my lighting pretty soon anyway so... i will let you guys know if it persists. thank you
dandy7200 February 11, 2007 February 11, 2007 Also I highly recommend getting a Blue Neon Striped Hermits. BEST their is for the Red Stuff!! If your interested I have 3 in my tank and could part with one for $10? LMK? Really? I have never heard of these. If Jamal is not interested, I would take them to give it a shot. I have a little Cyno in my 75 that has been setup for 4 months or so and know that it will eventually go away naturally but, would love to speed up the process. Thanks. Dan
HowardofNOVA February 11, 2007 February 11, 2007 Dan, If Jamal is not in need, Dan your welcome to it? If I can catch it, I might have a Mitrax Crab as well for $5 too?
quazi February 12, 2007 February 12, 2007 (edited) Jamal, Along with all the other fine suggestions above, I would recommend: - check you RO/DI TDS - poor water coming in will mean ineffective water changes. - change 20% of your water a week until things improve. I know that is a lot for a 180, but the solution to pollution is dilution. - Take an air line hose and syphon out the cyno. A larger hose will work fine, too. But it takes a while to get the cyno, so a small hose is really helpful. - Run Polyfilter. It will not hurt and is a very good chemical scrubber for the tank. just my 2 cents. jamal February 12, 2007 Author February 12, 2007 i need to pick up a tds meter as the one that i got broke so that might be a factor as i just thought of that myself as well. i used the little plastic vacuum to get some of it off. i may need to do that a few more times. its funny that i said crabs cant climb walls as i just bought some dwarf crabs yesterday and one of them climbed to the top of the tank before it fell.
