davelin315 January 17, 2007 January 17, 2007 I lent the school's RO/DI unit out to a parent as a thank you for hosting a tank all summer plus a couple of months and it was mistakenly left in the car for the past week. I got it back tonight and found out that 4 of the stages had cracked open from being frozen. I don't know if the booster pump is still functional and if there are any other hairline cracks anywhere, but my biggest concern is whether the filters themselves are now trashed. Anyone know anything about this? I figure the carbon elements are fine as long as the housing is not cracked on them and the DI should also be fine, but the membrane itself probably froze as did the pre-filters (5 and 1 micron) and I'm wondering if those need to be replaced as well. Since this is the school one and money has become incredibly tight because of the budget mistakes that have been made by the state over the past couple of years, all of the filters and the two extra stages were paid for by me so I'm not excited that this is broken and would like to be able to simply ask for the housings to be replaced... Any ideas?
fab January 18, 2007 January 18, 2007 Try contacting the manufacturer(s) and asking them. While you're at it ask them if they might sponsor your school project with a contribution in materials... fab
lmeyer January 18, 2007 January 18, 2007 Never had any first hand experience, but the Kent Marine instruction guide (http://www.kentmarine.com/assets/004/8637.pdf) says "Do not let the membrane freeze" (top of second column on page 2, emphasis theirs)l. Sorry, I suspect the membrane has been compromised. Do you know what the TDS generally is coming out of the membrane at the school? You could always run some water through the system and measure TDS as it comes out of that stage.
davelin315 January 18, 2007 Author January 18, 2007 Heard back from Buckeye Field Supply and they said that I would need to replace the membrane and obviously the housings. The membrane does get damaged by freezing. I'll have to replace the housings first and see if they work and then see if the membrane works or not. Not sure how much it froze. Huge bummer. Oh, and I've contacted numerous suppliers and they are willing to discount, but not donate.
