setting up a closed loop. What size/brand pump?

Recommended Posts

I want to set up a closed loop in my 110G tank but am not sure what size and brand pump to get.

the tank is viewable from the front and right side so I have the option of drilling the back and the left side.

Here's my plan:

I am using a mag 12 for my return pump and plan to keep it unless someone gives a good reason not to.

I want to drill the output hole in the left side of the tank and an intake on the right side of the back of the tank.

How high up should I put these holes?

What size bulkheads should I put in?

Is the placement of the intake and output holes ok?

I want to use an external pump. What brand/gph pump should I want to use? I am mostly interested in keeping Leathers and LPS so I want the flow to be too much for them but I also want to get all of the power heads out of the tank if possible.

I use the PanWorld 100PX-X with Dandy mod. It is rated at 1270.

My tank is also viewable from the front and right. The pump is fed by 3 drilled bulkheads: 2 in the back, 1 in the left panel. The return manifold just comes over the top of the tank in the back. There are 4 outlets, 2 in the back and 2 in the front, all opposing each other.

Overall I am happy with it. The pump works great and with the mod it is extremely quiet. If I had it to do over again though, I think I would have gone with one of the Sequence pumps to get more flow. I have never used them myself, but everyone who has seems to think they are great pumps.

I use a dart reef-flo pump on my 120g. Works great and it is quiet. I believe it is rated aroung 3200-3500 gph.

How is that much flow on your soft and lps corals? I've heard that they are great pumps but I'm afraid it will be too much for a non SPS tank.

I have some xenia, frogspawn, and some hammer coral. They some times get blown around a little, but that is when i change the flow patterns some. It really depends on how you design your closed loop. The more outputs you have for flow the less turbulant the flow will be. I currently have 8 outputs in my closed loop. I also have ball valves for each powerhead, which you can adjust flow. So if you have too much flow in an area you can adjust it so the flow is not too strong for you lps and softies.

You can always use a ball valve at the pump to reduce flow. Then if you decide to ever go mainly with sps, you will always have the capability to increase flow, instead of buying another pump.
