Last year the club hosted speaker Colin Foord at our Spring meeting.  Later in the year the club received a grant request from Colin, looking for support An Urban Coral Research and Rescue Facility with the goal to create a Miami native coral lab to do research on Miami native corals, with a LPS focus.  The board of directors approved the grant application and used some of the proceeds the club earned from hosting MACNA 2005 & 2015 to support the project along with Julian Sprung, Two Little Fishies, and others.  Colin also received a grant from the McPike-Zima Charitable Foundation and one from the city if Miami Beach.

Here is an update from Colin and the progress he and his team have made building the coral lab.  We will coordinate with Colin and try to set up a zoom presentation in the future to get an update for the membership.

From Colin:

The Miami Native Coral Lab is up and running for its first full quarter. Big thanks to @WAMAS (Washington DC Area Marine Aquarist Society) for their donation to help make it possible, and Two Little Fishies and Julian Sprung for all your support. Reefers helping reefs ftw! We had our lab’s first intern complete her masters research project this week comparing the growth rates of different photosynthetic gorgonians to determine which species are best for outplanting. Coming soon to The ReefLine
