I have a yellow tang which is bullying my smaller purple tang. I've had these fish for years. I'm not sure why it's getting worse but I have captured the tang. I was going to take it to Reef Escape but it's 1/2 away and schedule is killing me today.

My tank has been solid (clowns are even breeding) with no introduction of new animals or corals for years - so it should be safe.

PM me if you want it. I live in Reston

Have you tried the mirror method? Tangs will fight the mirror instead of each other. Usually takes 3 days to fix the majority of aggression. (Let me know if you want me to remove this ... just trying to prevent a potentially unnecessary rehoming.)

ah I forgot about this. Let me try it. GREAT idea and thanks for posting. I'll absolutely try it. These guys have been here for almost 10 years so I'd prefer to keep them. Any recommendation on the type/size mirror and where to place it?

Tried sending pm but wouldn't let me. How much and can you bring to WAMAS meeting?

Not sure whats up w/the PM, maybe b/c I just rejoined a minute before the post?

I'm going to try the mirror for now. My intent is to go to the meeting but w/the kids, I may not be able to.
I'll keep you posted. I just want the fish in a good home w/a good, established system so it lives happily, no need to pay if the mirror fails.

I used the rectangle Home Depot mirror 13x48. Hope that works for you. If not, I can rehome the tang. I have 210 gallon, just let me know.

I have one of those paper-backed foil mirrors outside my 120g facing in. It's about half a sheet of paper. I've done two in the tank before with some improvement. I keep one below the food feeder. They always hang out there anyway, so they'll beat up against the glass then, too. Good luck! It'd be awesome if you can keep them!

In case anyone cares, here's the status of the tang wars:

I found a handheld mirror and hung it up against the glass by some dental floss. Very classy, I know! At first sight, it's been a disaster. I have 3 tangs in the 90. The purple is pretty small and the smallest of the 3. Then the bully yellow, and the largest being a white tailed bristletooth which I think is the prettiest fish in the tank. The bristletooth was the most docile of the 3 and wouldnt bother anything since it came to the tank years ago.

When I put the mirror on, the yellow darted at himself. I thought "COOL! It's working perfectly!". Then the bristletooth took its turn at self annihilation. That was a shock given I never saw it being aggressive. Once the bristletooth began to dominate the vanity wars, the yellowtail resumed kicking the purple around!

Fortunately, my wife came up w/a brilliant idea and remembered we have a large 4 foot mirror hanging on a door. I pulled that off a few minutes ago and set it against the entire side of the front glass. The lights are out so we'll see what tomorrow's vanity wars bring :)

Isn't it crazy how aggreasive they get against the mirror?! Glad you had a larger one available. Hopefully once they calm down, a smaller one will work for maintenance. Keep us posted!

Crazy tangs. So now the bully occasionally gets bullied. If it gets aggressive, the purple now goes after it instead of running away!
Seems they tend to be fine most of the time, however. The aggression seems to come when I approach the tank and they want food.
