Guest Rileyporter October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 Hi there guys, One of the things about having a hobby and being married is you have to persuade your wife / husband into thinking that getting something to do with your hobby is a good idea. Well this is where the RODI comes in. I have been looking around and think I am going to go with a 100gpd setup. The question is, is there a way for me to use the 4gallon tank that comes with the setup to keep the line pressurized for the kitchen sink (so the wife can get water from there) and at the same time be able to pipe the rest to a storage container for the tanks? Possibly and auto top off setup? One last question is: I did see some RODI pressurized tanks for sale.. (you know the tall blue looking tanks) would that be a good alternative? From what I have seen they are really expensive though. Thanks guys for the help, See you all tomorrow! Riley
sturnmeyer October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 Normally the DI for the kitchen sink is a separate DI faucet that you install. Purely for drinking water. They usually come as a kit when you buy the tank. I don't see why you couldn't do what you ask if you are storing your RODI water for the fish tanks. I would think if you had a T and a couple of ball valves you could get it to work. The RODI unit keeps the tank full for the kitchen faucet. When you want to do your fish tank water then close the ball valve to the kitchen tank and open the one to your storage tanks. I'm not sure how you'd do it if you are having the RODI go straight to the tank. I store it. Not sure if this helped.....
Guest Rileyporter October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 Sort of the idea I was thinking.. problem being I dont have alot of experience with this kind of stuff. maybe a T on top of the mini tank one goes to sink then one goes to a tube that goes to my storage tank with a float valve on the end of it? That sound possible guys? Thx
Rascal October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 One of the things about having a hobby and being married is you have to persuade your wife / husband into thinking that getting something to do with your hobby is a good idea. Like my generator. "Really honey, it's just so the breast milk in the freezer won't go bad if we have a storm. It's for the good of the baby, honest." As for your question, I don't see any reason it couldn't be done. For example, my RODI goes to a float valve in a rubbermade tank I use as a freshwater resevoir. I have a powerhead in the resevoir plugged into an auto-top-off solenoid. Tubing from powerhead goes through my Kalk reactor and then drips into my sump. If you have something similar, it seems like you could just add a T fitting to the outlet line from your RODI so that 1 line goes to the freshwater resevoir and another line goes to the pressurized tank. Does that make sense? EDIT: drafted this earlier & then sent it before I saw last 2 posts. Looks like you've got it figured out. One other thing to consider is whether you really want to be drinking DI water. Lots of debate on the health issues (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=858200&highlight=drinking+rodi+water) which I won't get into. I do agree that it really doesn't taste very good though -- kind of a flat, metalic taste. You may want to have a line go straight from the RO to the drinking water tank and have only the tank water go through the DI canister.
Guest Rileyporter October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 Really? I have been drinking RO water WAY before i was into the reef tank scene. Hmmm... The old RODI water that I used to drink was VERY much better tasting then our tap water. I guess it depends on your water quality? Riley EDIT: OK i read the threads.. and Now that you mention it... It might have just been RO water... hmm... Makes it a little more complicated but still dooable..
ReeferMan October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 I thinking putting a T before or after the tank would work.
HowardofNOVA October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 When I was testing my RO/DI water with my Conductivity Meter (Which reminds me DaveLin, please bring to meeting), sorry, where was I. Oh yes the water coming out of RO/DI end was reading around zero parts per milosemens. Coming out of the faucet direct was about 325 ppms. Coming out of the RO tube (waste water) was reading like 385!! Basically was sending all the garbage out of that unit, surprised me for sure!
jason the filter freak October 13, 2006 October 13, 2006 hey riley what are the chances I can get a tour of your RODI monster so I can learn something before i set up mine?
davelin315 October 14, 2006 October 14, 2006 Hey Riley, contact Buckeye Field Supply. The guys that run it are very nice and have always responded quickly to e-mail questions from me.
