  1. I added it through a home-made funnel and a piece of PVC. Put the PVC down to the sand; fill it up, then slowly lift it.

I am doing the same thing; a piece of PVC w/ a funnel at the top and pour in and get placement pretty much where you want it. I figured to add a patchy thin layer and to stir in over time. I also put sand/argonite in mesh bags after rinsing and put in my sump for a couple of weeks before adding to tank. "The Other Bob' LOL

  2. It seems I am having my first breeding attempt. Two of my blue/green chromis are laying a mess of eggs on my magnetic algae/glass cleaner. I am not going to attempt to raise any fry but I am enjoying being a voyerer  watching them. I am curious about anyone else having similar experiences. Has anyone sucessfully bred and raised Chromis? Thanx Bob PS Realized this is in wrong thread.......

  3. I have always had "a few" of the typical small starfish in my tank. Some whole, some missing a leg or two and none very big. Tonight I was staring at one area and started to count and realized I had bunches and bunches of the little buggers. While I have not noticed any damage to my corals or mushrooms I started wondering how to control them. I started reading on line about the Harlequin shrimp and the fact they eat only starfish and some people have had great success with them. Wondering if anyone here has purchased or kept this pretty little shrimp and what your experiences were?

  4. A great place to add is in your overflow. By the time it gets to the sump it is diluted and mixed well before it gets to the tank. Also you can add second or third part in sequence because of dilution.

  5. I don't know, perhaps a dumb question for the more experienced reefers...... how do I vacuum the detritus out of the bottom of my sump? Its @ floor level and obviously no way to siphon. I can only think that a wet vac and draining the entire sump would be the way to go. I sure am hoping someone has a really neat easy way to accomplish this. :why:

  6. The Ny aquarium is a good aquarium but I wouldn't say great. My dad and I used to go at least once a year even when I lived down here. At the time I was into African cichlids and they have a large Lake Malawi display that we both always wanted to see.

Further out on the Island is; Atlantis Marine world aquarium http://www.atlantismarineworld.com/exhibit-indoor.html

We have not been there yet but I really want to go. If you decide to go let me know what you think. It looks like a pretty interesting place.

    Wow...atlantismarine world sound great!

  7. I am going to NYC to work over Thanksgiving and have Friday through Sunday free. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for any super good fish stores? Also, is the NY Aquarium in Brooklyn (Coney Island) worth the visit? I would hate to just hang out in the Village and become hopelessly drunk every night. LOL

  8. I have also been looking into purchase of an auto feeder. One thing I remember reading is to get one that "has air blowing?". Evidently many of the feeders get clogged with the excess humidity from either the sump or under the hood. Please advise which one you think is the best. Thanx.

  9. I was flattered by Howard suggesting I add myself to the tank tours...... I am flattered, still a Newby and learning but willing to hook up with anyone in DC to schedule a tour. Anyone else in DC want to put together something. Brian? Chris? Anybody? PM me. Lets do this thing.

  10. Codium AKA dead mans finger algae is also known as green fleece algae or green finger sponge algae. It is a slow growing algae that is very pretty and stable in my tank. It took me a while to find out what this stuff is. I have finally had to do some harvesting. Tangs will pick at it a small amount but really dont eat much. This algae grew from my Marshall Island rock when I set up my tank and I think it is the best "extra" I got with living rock. My next project is to try gluing some pieces on rubble and see if I can grow out some other colonies...... but if there is no interest this may just be for fun. I would like to share my bounty if anyone is interested. I like the look of a landscaped tank and this stuff is great because its like a slow growing tree. It doesnt shed, drop leaves, make a mess and it slowly grows lush and full. I does not do much for nitrate export. So.... any one else growing this or know of it?

Very nice!!! How long has it been running? Looks 'mature'. What are the dark green 'mounds'? Some kind of Halimeda?

I am just @ 1.5 years.... Thank you.

  11. I think many have gone the ICK route. I had 2 bouts about 7 months apart; each after adding a Tang to my 150 mixed reef. With help from (Grav) I added a 40 watt sterlizer and did the "kickIck" treatment. It is slow and somewhat expensive in a big tank. I just couldnt stand the thought of a break down and 6 weeks etc. The second bout was when I added my Hippo tang. Same thing but less severe because of the sterlizer already working. John a@ BRK has said that there is always some ICK in nature and it will rear its ugly head when fish are stressed or not eating well.

I have decided to live with the ICK (IN REMISSION?) in my tank. The kick ick does work but it is a gentle treatment and you need to treat, and retreat. It takes about 2-3 weeks, turn off your skimmer, watch your water chemistry and pray. I now have a happy and growing Hippo and have not seen any outbreaks in 2 months. I consider the fact if I add another new fish that I may need to do another treatment. Needless to say I stock 2 big bottles of Kick Ick just incase....... Good Luck PS I am running salinity at a higher level. About 1.030.

  12. Not sure if this is what you mean, but on the top of my canopy I have a piano hinge about 1/3 of the way from the front. The front face of the canopy is fixed in place to the top, so when I open it the whole front part of the canopy swings up and out of the way.

For lights it goes like this:

    T5 - VHO - hinge - MHs - VHO - T5.

The T5 & VHO in the front swing up along with that part of the canopy when I open it. I just have enough slack in the wires to allow that to happen.

A better carpenter would have made it look a lot better, but overall I am very happy with the design. The best part about it is the access it gives to the tank. I think I could throw on a mask and snorkel and get my head in there if I wanted to. Probably wouldn't be the best thing for skimmer performance though.

Rascal, Any chance of a photo? I too am interested in changing my "custom" hood and would like to entertain other ideas. Thanks Bob

  13. I stopped by today @ Tropical Lagoon on Georgia Ave because I was in the neighborhood. Its a funky store that I adopted when I started with fresh water. Occasionally I will purchase there when I find something unusual or really good looking, or good prices. They have a great assortment of blue Crocia clams for $39.00. Since I havent been shopping for clams perhaps this is not a super price; but many I have seen in stores are up to $60.00 for similiar 2.5 to 3 inch. Seems like a good price to me. :bluefish:

  14. I saw a beautiful pink tailed Trigger today...... no information in any of my fish books. I think the Trigger is a great looking fish, but understand many are not reef safe. Anybody have any suggestions for reef safe and friendly Triggers. I am dealing with a 150 gal understocked tank so...... slightly bigger would be ok. Thanks for any info.

  15. I got 3 very small neon gobies about 8-10 months ago and they are a great little fish. I lost one after about 4 months. I assume some sort of intestinal disorder. The other 2 have grown a lot. They have each taken up opposite sides of the tank and each have their own fish that they clean. One thing that surprises me is the amount of nori and greens they eat. I put out nori clips for my tangs everyday and one gobie in particular will eat and eat until he is stuffed. This is every day! They eat everything I put in the tank. Dry, brine shrimp, marine food, mysis etc. But even after eating this they will hit the nori between Tang visits. Does anyone else have experience with these great little pig fishes?

  16. I hit there today just to go to a fish store. The tanks looked much better than when I first visited 8mo. to a year ago. Yes, the selection is fabulous, dont know about prices; never asked..... but know I wouldnt buy anything without a long quarantine.

  17. Ok, I had an ick go-around a couple months ago and with Phil/Grav advice I purchased a 40 watt sterilizer and did two rounds of Kick-Ick. Things seemed to clear up. Two weeks ago I purchased a great small hippo tang. (he is eating great including garlic) (I know they are a major ick magnet.) Anyway, Ick has returned. I have just finished a two week course of the Kick-Ick according to the directions on the bottle. While the ick is not rampant; the hippo still has a couple spots and my midas bleny has a couple of spots. Having the skimmer off for two weeks, I feel I need to start up the skimmer, do a water change and wait a couple days to a week to start a second go-around of the kick ick medicine. Any advice for those of you who fight the ick battle????? Removing all fish and waiting the six weeks is not an option for me but you can be sure when I ever tear down my 150 gal. NOTHING WILL GO IN WITHOUT QUARANTINE. Another lesson learned the hard way.
