  1. Hello Maegan, with the school situation these days I am not sure how or if you are maintaining your science class tanks, but I am giving everything that is left away. Probably to much for your use but it might go at another group tear down if someone ordinates it. I asked one of the long time members about that idea tonight as he wanted some of the stuff for himself. Everything needs to go the same day.

You can find the details by searching Sale Want ads for "120" and look at Free 120 Reef System.

    Best Regards,

    Dennis

How much space do you have for lights? Or as suggested above just go with one or two of EverGrow's fixtures.

    TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Series of pictures showing the conversion process.
  5. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Under new light for about one week. Previously under a similar 2080 layout without the T5's - looking better.
  6. The TEK 8 I used is wide enough it insert almost any LED fixture up to about 9" wide without effecting the T5 reflectors using a flush mount approach as shown in final product. If anybody wants to drop by for pros & cons just drop me a PM.
  7. No problem as I prefer the EverGrow LED's close to the water (a few inches) to reduce spillage into the room and seeing the LED's sitting in the chairs is a negative. As to spread D120's are a combination of 90*, 120* Lenses with the option of changing those out (or removing some lens completely) as the setup matures to tweak the coverage. The D120's just "sit" in the frame and come out very easily. The new 4 54w T5 bulbs do a good job of blending everything and are 2 Actinic and 2 15 K's. I don't think 2 D120's are enough for a 120 (48 x 24 x 24) reef tank even if hung high.

    Another front picture.

  10. http://wamas.org/forums/gallery/album/1409-tek-8-t5-to-a-4-t5-2-d120s/ Need to figure out how to copy pictures from my WAMAS gallery to DYI section. In the meantime here is the link to my Gallery.
  11. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Still needs to be cleaned up. Taken down burs removed so D120's lay flatter and paint touched up.
  12. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

While it still needs the cleanup and paint touchup all 4 sides are mounted and the LED's themselves are flush with the TEK's reflectors. Almost a perfect fit.
  13. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Another picture of just one D120 partially installed. Biggest driver for this project was ,while I love the LEDs, especially the two 16” D120 needed supplemental light on a 48 x 24 x 24 tank. When I got the free 48” TEK T5 54w fixture the combo was the logical answer / challenge. This is the tank I was thinking about another 2080 for last month, but since I had the extra D120’s over a QT I started to design a combined fixture
  14. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Both fixtures test installed before end "L" pieces were attached.
  15. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Two holes cut for D120 to drop into. Made frame out of 3/4 x 3/4 painted aluminum "L" strips. One 36" strip of each D120 woks good using fixture screws mounted flush with D120 top so it didn't fall through (see next picture).
  16. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Painters tape to allow cut lines to be drawn on fixture. Cut easy with new Roto Zip metal blade (need safety glasses).
  17. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Four outside T5 54w bulb's working. Bulbs will be replaced with two Actinic and two 15k's. Reflector also had to be cut in half for the new unit as the fixture originally had two 4 bulb reflectors.
  18. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

First stage was to remove bad ballast and four of the eight end caps.
  19. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Almost looks like a professional design in the end although had to tweak it along the way. Probably a 4 hour job if you have all the supplies on hand. One man job although two would have been nice. With changing design along the way I made a few trips to HD and Ace. As to maintenance: I can slide the fixture back and have 12” opening or if I need more room the D120’s each pop out separately to reduce the weight to slide it even farther back or just lift the whole fixture down – maybe 25 - 30 lbs. with the D120’s. – doable just awkward.
  20. From the album: TEK 8 T5 to a 4 T5 & 2 D120's

Finished combination T5 and 2 D120 LED fixture on 120 g new reef. Both the tank and fixture need a good cleaning. Notice the 8 hanging wires are not needed for the D120's to securely mount the 2 LEDs in the TEK fixture and the 4 T5's provides better coverage and spectrum then just the 2 D120's for a 48 x 24 x 24 tank. PS: Glass lids on order and will replace the temporary piece of Plexiglas.

    54g corners on 180g reef

The tanks are now stable and are 100% tied into the 100 gallon remote refugium / sump in utility room. The live rock used is mostly 12 years old. Two D120's were installed over the 54 g on the left now and two D120's and an IT 2080 on the 180 covering the full light spectrum with the existing 4 bulb VHO fixture (mixed bulbs). And I am using the dimmers to match the lights look. The 54 on the right also has an IT 2080. In person with all lights on the same "look" continues the one tank illusion. Will post a new picture with current lighting soon. Cell phone picture is not good but you can get the idea.
