  1. All the fish I've bought from them have lived (except a large lawnmower blenny, and he died because he didn't have enough to eat. Stupidity on my part). Also, all the corals I've bought from them have survived. I like this store cause its on the way home for me. Split my time between TFW and Aquatic Creations.
  2. Tested the filtered water this morning for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. 0 on all. I don't have a TDS meter. Guess I will try getting one.
  3. Sorry to hear about your accident! I guess you're excused from membership duities then.
  4. Don't mean to be a nag but I still haven't been switched over to a member. Can't wait to be an official part of the club!
  5. Lol, she'd have a heck of a time getting into the can, but you never know with cats... I'll scrub down the can and try testing the water for ammonia and the like. Thanks everyone!
  6. Brand new trash can. Brand new rodi. It is somewhat possible that the cat was poed about the new water container, but I really think the smell is coming from the water itself. There is a lid to the can, and it is fresh water only, not mixed with salt. I do circulate and warm the water for water changes.
  7. I'm not really new to the hobby but am new to my Ro/DI unit so I guess this goes here. I got my ro/di filter from Premium Aquatics, the cheaper ones they have on there, 50GPD. Its filtered maybe 150 gallons total. I keep the filtered water in a 20 gal brute trashcan. Well the fresh filtered water is nice and clear, smells fine. But if it sits for a few days it starts to smell like ammonia, ie cat pee. I'm guessing this isn't good for the tank, so I usually dump out the bad smelling water and filter fresh. So what is going on? I don't airate or circulate the filtered water. Should I?
  8. So jealous. All my zoas got eaten by sundial snails. Had some nice baby blues too. Hopefully I can get some zoas going again soon.
  9. Hi, I paid up yesterday and haven't be switched over to member yet. I know its not that long but was anxious to see the members section!
  10. I really really wish I could make it to the class, but I've got kiddy birthday parties to attend sunday. I did find the directions online and am going to try to make some when I finally have a free weekend. I love the low environmental impact man made rocks have, so I doubt I'll buy another piece of live rock if mine turn out ok.
  11. I want to add for those willing to travel out to Frederick, check out Aquatic Creations. They're mainly a pond store but have some nice salt stuff there. Their corals vary in quality depending on how long they've had them in stock (worse the longer they have in stock as they have one display tank and don't maintain very well) but their fish are always excellent and they will not sell you sick fish. They're pretty knowledgable as far as fish setups go and will order anything you want fish or coral wise. Check out their website: www.aquaticcreationsltd.com. I also like Tropical Fish World in Rockville and Sea Save in Glen Burnie. Don't like House of Tropicals much cause their fish have always looked terrible, but they've got some nice live rock (expensive though).
  12. For some nice live rock, House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie, MD has some good stuff, but very pricey. Some of their stuff is cured, some is not, but it may be worth the trip out there to check it out. They have 3 rubbermaid troughs full of live rock, you can dig in and get your own.
  13. Hi, I'm a long time poster over at Reef central and just found a new LFS today that I wanted to share with everyone. It wouldn't get much exposure over at RC so I figured I'd post about the store over here. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post or isn't allowed. I looked all over your forums and couldn't find a more appropriate place to post this. I also see a lot of you are in more the DC area, but I'm sure some of you from Silver Spring and MC would be willing to check this store out. I live in Columbia so I normally go to House of Tropicals, which if anyone has been there they know that some weeks their livestock looks OK and other weeks it looks rough. So I had planned to go to House of Tropicals to get some dry goods and maybe a new coral. I looked on the internet to find directions, and happened to see a new place very close to House of Tropicals called Sea Save. So Sea Save is a small store in an industrial area. They don't have much by way of dry goods, but will order anything you need at a reasonable price. I needed 2 24" VHO bulbs and they're getting them on Wednesday for $25 each. That's as much as it would cost online to ship, so it's reasonable. But the real gem of this shop is the corals. They have a few big vats set up with a wide variety of LPS and clams. Also lots of live rock and base rock. I got a nice big rock of orange center zoanthids for $45. All of their fish look great too. The owner has got some patent pending system for quarenting their fish. They also sell most fish based on orders. So if you want something specific, they'll get it in, quarantine it, and there you go. If anyone is interested, here is their website. They're open all day Saturday, but by appointment on weekdays. Weird way to do it, but I assume this is to cut down on operating costs. The owner probably has some deal on the rent since it's a pretty crappy location. But definetly if anyone has the chance check it out. They also have R/O water, fresh and premixed salt. I'm done with my raving now.
