  1. Long Time No See

So I think it's time for an update.

As you can see I have a nice red anemone that's growing huge. My two clowns are still with me and I have a 6 line wrasse. Some other small coral here and there, but nothing too exciting. I'm actually in the process of perparing to move my tank to a new location. And I am also planning an upgrade to a bigger tank... I can't wait!!

    Here's some much needed pictures...

  2. Has anyone drilled a hex before? I need some suggestions for this 52 hex. I was thinking just to put 1 drain hole and one return hole - that should be plenty for a seahorse tank. I hope I don't break the tank - I haven't drilled anything since my lesson at the frag fest.

Why drill a hole for the return? Although I'm sure 2 holes would be fine, I think avoiding holes whenever possbile is a good idea, especially on a return, don't forget it will siphon.

  3. What I don't get with the baffles is the 1 Inch spacing between the 3 baffles that everyone says it has to be for microbubbles. I cannot even get the silicon tube the fit a little bit in the 1 inch gap to even get started. How is it possible to silicone this properly, especially with the middle baffle. Does it really need to be only 1 inch spacing? There has to be a better way.

Check out my build thread, i think i have some step by step photos. When I did them I did not worry about getting it on both sides, if you get the calk gun in tight it will push some silicon through. It is not a huge deal because there will not be tons of pressure on these baffles, if you have doubts then you coulld at least silicon them from opposite wher ethe water will be coming from, that way it has something to hold up against. But again, it's not critical.

  4. This may be a stupid quesiton, but I'll ask anyways. Are there any coral that I can safely put near an Anemone? I just have some blank spots, but don't want to put any SPS near it due to it getting stung. What about LPS and zoos? anything I can put near it safely?

  5. None of the links are working, what's your question?

It's the forum software, if you copy and paste it from the code box and remove the two spaces it will work fine.

Regardless, I'm trying to get some bulb recommendations. Right now I just have two daylight and two actincin, wonder if i should just stay with that or switch it up.

  6. I need to get 4 new bulbs for my 30 gal tank. 24" T5s. Want to order from marine depot because i'll get free shipping..

For some reason the link isn't working so you'll have to C&P:

    Thoughts? Thanks dudes.

  7. With the evaporative cooler you are working on, I would think that if you run water over a window screen (I'm thinking you're probably trying to fashion this like a humidifier) you'll get a ton of salt being removed from your system as well and create some new problems, but post up about your results.

I don't see how the salt would leave, since water will go onto the screen and carry any salt back into the system. Only the H20 evaporates, and even though it may leave salt crystals behind in that instant, they will be immediately washed back into the system by nonevaporated water. I would still monitor salinty for the next couple days to be sure.

Also, check out this cool setup as an idea: http://www.cvreefers.org/showthread.php?t=7169

  8. Thanks Ziggy!

Yeah, we're kind of using the 360 as a room divider in a large room in the basement. I'll have my office/work space on one side of the 360. The other side is our aquarium room, with a couch, love seat, and a view of the 450 and the 360.

Are your two tanks going to be connected? ie sharing the same sump? Or will you have a seperate topoff, skimmer, etc?

  9. I've read in several previous posts reference to a layer of foam on top of 3/4 ply.

I'm wondering if there is a specific type or brand of foam sheet that people use or a specific thickness?

Also, when it comes to angle braces in the corners, does it matter if they are only in front, or only in sides, in both? My understanding is these are for lateral stability.

    Thanks

I would ask the tank manufacturer about what to put between the tank and stand, some may suggest nothing, some may suggest foam. I would follow their advice, also may prevent you from voiding warranty.

As for angle braces, this depends a lot on what kind of tank it is, the stand construction, and many other factors. Angle braces may not even be necessary.

  10. I believe one of my 1 inch pipes is clogged.... any ideas on how I should try to get in unclogged? It's still working, but the emergency drain is now being used because of it. I am guessing its likekly some macroalgae or something, not a snail. What do you guys think I should do? I was thinking of trying some draino.

  11. I'd like to convert my existing 55 Gallon to a refugium. I've seen a few members actually do it and was wondering any good recommendations on baffle placement. A couple of other questions:

    1) Where is a good place to buy acrylic thick enough and silicone that's aquarium safe?

    2) Anyone know a good place to get my tank drilled for 2" hole? I'd like this hole to go to the pump.

    Thanks!

    ~Joe

    1) I used glass for my baffles, so can't help you there.

    2) I used GE Windows Silicone I for mine, so far so good. Do not get the II because that is the mold resistant stuff.

  12. Grav mentioned the same thing about the bubbles in an email to me. He said what would work well is to use under-over-under instead of over-under-over on the baffles. The water level in that last compartment should be the only thing that fluctuates. I will have it controlled by my ATO, but it has a range of a couple inches. I put the water level a little low in the picture so that you could see it was indeed different.

Your water level is definitely an issue. I did a basic 3 compartment setup, from L to R. With my drain, skimmer, filtersock in the first. An over under, over, refuge, an over and then the return. My water never goes below the over in the last compartment due to my ATO system, so I never get microbubbles. But if it were to go low (like in your picture, and like when I played around during setup) microbubbles will be an issue.

IF you are confident in your ATO to always maintain a high level then I wouldn't worry about it, otherwise you may want to take gravs advice and switch to an over, under.

  13. so i have two clowns, and a yellow watchman goby (hides all the time too)... anways id like to get another colorful fish to fit in, maybe something yellow/purple/blue. Something that will swim around and always be seen when walking up to the tank. Any ideas?

  14. The reefcontroller that Lanman mentioned is the controller such as ACjr, ACIII or ACPro. They are expensive with the jr model going for somehwere around mid $200 being the cheapest. But, it also does a whole lot more than monitor and maintain your tank's temp. If the reef controller is out of your current budget, you can also buy a temp controller. You see folks selling them all the time on RC or you can buy new.

    James

Once you add up the price of timers, surge protectors, temp controller, etc. I think it is pretty close to breaking even for the ACjr. It just makes things so much easier for me, I don't ever have to worry about anything.

  15. when I first set up the tank, I had a modded MJ (I think it was a 1200). No matter where I put the pump, sand blew all over the place. So with that in mind, I know that anything near or more than 1000gph is too much for my tank.

I guess one option that I have (since Tunze doesn't have a controller for the 6025) is that I can hook both of them up to my controller (not installed) and let that cycle them on and off.

I've got 2 6025s in my 29gal tank, I love them, there is also good support for these items. I recently had a bracket break (poorly made IMO), I posted on RC Tunze forum, and Roger (Tunze Rep) is sending me a new one free of charge.

One thing to keep in mind, I think the Tunze's can only be turned on/off every 15 minutes otherwise it voids warranty.

    HTH.

  16. I'm really digging your woodworking skills... really a beauty... must consult you on a stand for my 15 gallon nano when football season is done...

    Thanks!

i think the algae is called dragons tounge, tank is looking good, a lil green buy good

Yes, definitely a little green, I've been neglecting my tank because I've been so busy. I plan to cleanup today/tomorrow.

  17. Update

So I added another 6025 to my tank for some more flow, I think I needed it...

  18. I had a problem few months back as well Sonny. I order Blue Xenias, a monticap, and zoas off the site. I wanted them sent to my house instead of my office, but they were sent to my office by mistake. They were sitting in my office for 3 days and eventually the Xenia died, luckily the monticap and zoas survived. I was suppose to receive a replacement coral or refund for the Xenias, and wrote tons of email. So far I haven't received anything. Is there anything you can do Sonny?

I'm in a similar boat, my shipping came one day late, the tracking information never worked, but the corals never made it. I've been waiting patiently, last time he said he was waiting on UPS, not sure what's going on now. :/
