  1. Severity isn't so bad, but there are a lot of scratches after 6 hard years with some stupid stuff done over that time. I looked at all the things I want to do with my tank and decided this was one I would farm out if possible. Already spending more time than I can afford. Plus this is the one thing that if I mess it up will really be hard to recover from. I'll look around a bit first, but thanks for the input!
  2. I have been thinking about culturing my own phyto and zoo plankton. Going broke buying the stuff in the stores. Have been online and seen some plans for DIY reactors, but found the Zinn reactor online and am really interested. I have been in contact with the manufacturer, but they are not selling the reactor in the states yet. May try to do it DIY, but looking to see if anyone is interested in trying it out w/ me. Haven't figured out everything they are doing from the pictures yet, but I'm working on it. 3. Hi all, I just converted 1/3rd of my sump to a reverse photoperiod refugium. Added sand and lights over the weekend. Have called the local stores I use, but none of them have any macro algae at the moment. I could wait until they get it in stock, but patience is not my virtue. Anyone have some extra they want to sell off? Probably most interested in Caulerpa racemosa followed by Caulerpa sertularoides unless others have different suggestions.
  4. I've put some nasty scratches on the inside of my tank over the years. Am looking for someone who buffs out the inside of existing tanks. Does anyone out there know of a service that will do this?
  5. Lost my reef about 2 years ago after an ugly incident w/ a cucumber and a return pump. Needless to say, the pump won and my reef lost! Was travelling a lot back then and didn't have time to devote to starting over. Still don't have time, but getting back in anyway. Haven't found an LFS I like and am looking for suggestions. In particular, I want to get some soft corals and LPS. Could be interested in Leathers, Colts, Kenya Tree, Hammer, Brains, Fungia, Zooanthids, Xenia, Clove, etc. I don't think there is much in my neck of the woods (Kensington, MD, near the elementary school we have meetings in). Used to go to Marine Care (out of business), Discount Pets (went downhill, out of business), Congressional (still there, not much selection for soft corals, though), Totally Fish (moved to a new location, reef doesn't seem to be working out at new store yet), Tropical Lagoon (seems to be my best bet for the hammers and bubbles, not sure about other corals). I'm ready to look elsewhere (Baltimore, Northern VA, Southern PA?), but don't want to drive forever and be disappointed. Ideally would find a place with a decent selection and knowledgeable staff, but would settle for just the selection.
  6. Thanks, thats about what I figured. I will probably keep on doing the system the way I have been, I took another look at the cost and buying the regenerable resins does seem like it should save money. I'm not familiar with buckeye supply. Are they a good source? I buy mine from champion lighting. What do you do with your used resin? I have a fair amount of it stored up and would like to do the environmentally sound thing with it if I am not going to regen it.
  7. Hello all! When I set up my system, the LFS recommended (and I bought) the Maxxima-R 24GPD. His logic was that the anion tends to be used up much more quickly than the cation. He felt that even if I just bought new media each time, it would be cheaper than using the mixed media, because I would be swapping out the cation significantly less often. I use the filter for both top off and water changes on my 400 gallon system. The LFS owner also told me that he had a friend who collected used up cation and anion resins and did the regen for a bunch of people at one time. The plan was that I would be part of the group getting my regen done in a bulk session. Unfortunately, the LFS was sold, the prior owner is now mostly out of the hobby, the store has closed, and the relationship never materialized. I would like to do the regen, but a) don't know how, and B) don't really want the caustic chemicals around the house with my small children. I see four options: 1) Switch to a mixed resin system and stop messing with the regen. Anybody have any thoughts on the different amount of times to use up the resins? 2) Continue buying new resin as needed and not doing the regen. 3) Learn how to do the regen. Anybody got instructions for this? 4) Find someone who is already doing the regen and offer something in trade for adding mine to their mix. If you are interested, but don't have enough used up resin to start, don't worry, I've got plenty. Anyone interested? BTW, I'm in Kensington if you are interested.
  8. The more the merrier as long as its okay with Grav (since he replied first). I'm in Kensington, near the school where we have the meetings. Tuesday through Thursday of next week would work for me.
  9. I am in the middle of re-establishing my tank. I have a 240 gallon former reef. I say former because I had a sea cucumber commit suicide in the return from the sump. Wiped out the whole system. Right after I was sent on travel by work for about 6 months. All that remained when I was done was a ton of algae. I've stripped the tank, put the rock in buckets to kill off the algae, and am about ready to start over. I plan on switching from Jaubert to a more traditional Berlin system, so I don't need the sand anymore. It is yours free if you come and get it. It is still in the tank, so you would have to help get it out. I'll try to get it out first, but with a four year old and two week old child, the odds aren't good. Also, I wouldn't object to some help if you have talent in arranging live rock. P.S. if anybody knows someone who removes scratches from inside acryllic tanks, I'm looking to hire someone for this. I put in some nasty scratches and am afraid to make it worse by trying to remove them myself.
