  1. I would recommend more height to interrupt fish sight lines, and make sure you are leaving enough space for the corals to grow out -- space to avoid coral warfare as well as space to still have room to clean the glass.
  2. Huge thanks to the new board members for stepping up to lead the club this year. Volunteering your time and energy makes a real difference, and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead.
  3. I appreciate the tip. Catalina Island is definitely at the top of my list if things work out and I have a full day to explore.
  4. I'm heading to the Aquarium of the Pacific this week on a bit of a last-minute trip. Ideally, I’ll have time for a relaxed visit, but depending on how travel goes, I might only have time for a quicker walk-through. If you’ve been recently, I’d really appreciate any tips on must-see exhibits or highlights that I shouldn’t miss. What stood out most to you?
  5. With the energy company sending out winter storm emergency preparedness alerts, I've topped up the charge on all of my various backup batteries and chargers, dug out my battery powered airstones and sponge filter, and prepared extra saltwater for an emergency water change if needed. I also have hand warmers and a blanket to tape to the outside of the tank if necessary. Anyone want to share your own good, unusual, or just enthusiastic plan to respond to potential power outages? If you have MTS, does your emergency prep vary based on the size of the tank, or do you have a one-size-fits-all plan?
  6. Hilary Jaffe's latest YouTube video for SaltwaterAquarium.com has a few visual references to the WAMAS community Facebook page at 4:10 and 4:42. The topic of the video is money saving tips for saltwater aquariums, and I can definitely agree that the being a member of the WAMAS community has not only made this hobby more enjoyable, but also more financially feasible, thanks to our generous members and sponsors. Hilary Jaffe was the guest speaker at our Winter 2023 meeting. SaltwaterAquarium.com is a WAMAS Platinum Sponsor.
  7. Interesting study on reef sounds encouraging coral to settle: news story on reef sounds study
  8. These are fantastic!
  9. What a surreal full circle moment!
  10. From the one pic, it looks like it may be cyanobacteria. Does it blow away easily when disturbed? If it is cyano, manual removal, water changes, good flow, and making sure your water parameters are in range can help.
  11. An interesting update on corals that were rescued during this year's high ocean temps in FL Keys... they are returning the corals to the ocean: News article
  12. If you have a baby great white hiding in the back of your tank (I wouldn't be surprised) and it's drinking Sprite and Dr. Pepper, you might need to get that sorted before your surgery date. Catching a caffeinated shark is hard enough with two arms.
  13. I'll be curious to see if it has any impact on the hobby as they move forward with implementation efforts.
  14. Last night at the UN, countries agreed to the High Seas Treaty. The goal of the new treaty is to place 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, versus the current 1.2%. https://apnews.com/article/un-oceans-biodiversity-treaty-0b024fa07e8c1947236d8b8491ebf92c https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-64839763
