  1. I can't say anything about other ones but I believe derasa clams are meant to be on the sandbed so I have mine on the sand. I have two derasas, a giant one that I got from lowsingles in feb this year and a small one from live aquaria a month? ago. https://imgur.com/a/uKsUuN1

I am running hydra 52HD, and the big one gets 180~150 par and the little one gets like 100~120 par. Running with a refugium and infrequent auto water changes, no skimmer and filtersocks. Nitrates 5~10, phosphates .09. Alkalinity is 7.11 being tested 4 times a day by alkatronic and dosing all for reef to keep things stable.

I dose kz sponge power at full dose and LPS amino at half dose manually, not dosing any phyto right now.

I'm surprised to hear you're having a lot of trouble with your system considering your tank photos I see. Maybe try dosing more clam foods like sponge powder?

Avast Marine has a product called a Barrel Tender V2 that is designed for this purpose.  I haven’t personally used one but heard good things about their products.

Thanks, I didn't know about it I'll check it out.

I put a float switch near the bottom of my water tank and connected it to my apex. When the water level hit the switch it opened a Neptune solenoid for 3 hours to fill it. To prevent overflows my RO had an auto-shutoff and the input line to the tank went through a float valve to make sure it didn’t overflow. I also had the program fill the tank every Saturday regardless.

So when you use the solenoid, do you only shutoff the output valve and let the backpressure shut off the waste production? Or do you shut off the input

  3. You could use a large brute trash can and fill it with RODI water maybe? I can't imagine a 10 gallon system will go through more than 20~30 gallons of evaporation in a month right?

And maybe you can use an auto feeder to feed tiny amounts every day and set it up like a month before you leave so you can deal with any problems that might occur

  4. Is anyone using an automated tool to fill their brute trash can whenever it gets low and stop it when it gets high? Right now I'm thinking about using a pair of neptune optical sensors + solenoid to do it but was wondering if there are cleaner ways to do it

  5. I managed to bring home and setup tpallas' peninsula drop-off tank, and it came with a 24" T5 fixture I would like to use, except I am told no drilling this time.

I thought about using a floating mount like this video:

I'd copy what he did, use 1515 with gusset + plates and drill it into the stand on one side. Anyone have any experience designing something similar? I'm worried on if a L joint would hold up to the weight of the 24" T5 fixture well enough or if it would end up failing. I would appreciate any sort of insight. Thanks!

Alternatively, looking for suggestions on how to mount LED's to the tank in a clean way, assuming I use the LED arms for each LED. One in the back and one to the side maybe?

Real Ziploc bags.  Not the knock off ones.

You can buy them online or just ask your local store.  Ziplocs are not very reliable and I find it very difficult to get air sealed into them but will do in a pinch.  If you use them a neat trick is to rubber band the corners but if you get it filled with air you risk the bag tearing or the ziploc itself popping open.

Thank's for the advice, ended up sealing my anemones in ziplocs to drop off at a store, I'm going to throw them in to a larger one so it's still safe even if it pops.

Here are a couple of videos, a couple where I set my cellphone down to watch them.

Now I feed them pellets but will also treat them to live black worms and thawed PE mysis.

Whoa these are really cool! Didn't even realize people had mudskipper tanks at this club

What species of crab is that in the second video?

  8. I'm considering selling my REEFER 350 and upgrading to a larger 4' or 6' aquarium. Do you have any recommendations on what brands to look for? I'd prefer a tank that includes stand/sump, but if you know separate setups that are pretty cost effective, I'd love to hear it too. Thanks

  9. Thank you! So much work to do. Do you maybe know of a professional company that can do it all?

I know both Reef eScape and Quantum reefs have moving services but it was fairly expensive, I believe I was quoted like $90/hr/person for one of the stores? Might have been higher. This was also the price at January last year so things might be different now

  10. I would think ORA could give you a group from the same cluch if you call the Liveaquaria Florida office.

Beyond Mitch, one of the guys at BRS breeds clowns as a side job and has a few groups available:

BRS's latest video on their harem tank is excellent too, IMO.

I just saw a bunch of black ocellaris swimming together on aquatic creations. My guess is that they came from the same batch.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check them out as

  11. Maybe wait a bit and see what the Kessil A360X brings to the table at what price? We might see a decreased price on the older A360 models new and also some second hand models on sale as well.

Jk it's being distributed around November, probably too late for what you're looking to get.

  12. From what I've read, it has a WiFi dongle coming and it still uses the same old K-link cable (i.e. 3.5mm audio) for 0-10v.

Hmm that's fair. Are you going to be upgrading to these kessils depending on what changes are coming to them? Or just sticking to the older models

  13. I'm certainly interested and the projected release date will probably be in line with our 150g going live.

The only thing I don't like so far is that they don't have wifi built in and need a special connector/cable. Otherwise really liking the sleek design.

  14. Buy the hole saw and borrow a drill.

Time to pop that hole drilling cherry!

I would but I haven't found a place find replacement ATO containers for the reefer series in case I *#@! it up lmao. Maybe I'll buy cheap tanks from petco and give it a shot first

I just drilled my first tank about two weeks ago. It really is as easy as everyone says. Watch a few YouTube videos and drill away. I was nervous but everything turned out fine.

Also you should plan your plumbing before you drill... things like return lines and whether or not drill for them too is important.

I've got the parts on BRS shopping cart and roughly figured out, I just can't decide if I want to redo my plumbing from the overflow directly to it or if I should feed it off one of my reactors to make it easier

  15. Is there a member in the Fairfax area willing to help me drill a glass tank? I'm hoping to turn my ATO into a refugium but I don't own nor am I good with power tools.

I also have no idea what I'm doing with plumbing but that's a bridge I'll cross then

Looking to do this exact thing

  16. If you’re OK paying for shipping, Mitch can guarantee they all come from the same clutch. If nothing else, call and ask a bunch of questions - he’s a wealth of information about all things clowns. He’d be able to help you figure out the best way to go about doing it.

Yeah thanks for the tip, will definitely get in touch with him.

How are his prices? Hopefully he can give me a slight discount for buying a bunch together

  17. I have a good buddy in Chicago who breeds clowns, Mitch May, his company is Booyah’s Reef. He breeds basically every kind of perc/O designers and some of his own fancy ones too. I’m sure he’d set you up. 708-715-0424 tell him Ryan sent you over and say hi for me!

Hey thanks for the heads up! I'll give him a text soon

Pacific East Aquaculture is selling pairs for $29

Good deal, thanks! No way to guarantee that they come from the same clutch right?

ORA sells them through liveaquaria too. Drop shipped straight from the ORA facility in Florida to your home…

( or even better, to the UPS customer service near your home if you do “hold for pickup”. Ships out the night before, and arrives at the UPS facility by 8:30 in the morning)

Thanks for the tip, will check out

  18. Planning on rebooting my tank as a clownfish/anemone tank when I move so I figured I'll start planning now. Does anyone have recommendations on where I can get multiple juvenile clowns fairly cheap compared to normal? I'd like black clowns but nothing super specific or not looking to be super strict on grades.

  19. I know they're considered a good detritvore and was wondering if people added these deliberately or if they're the sort that's "it'll eventually show up in your tank anyway" kind. Also wondering if they're worth adding at all or if the crabs/snails are good enough to not worry about it
