  1. I seriously thought about a Dream Box but just couldn't get myself to spend the money or the lead time on a custom one. Went with Pure Reef (after seeing yours Alan) and an RD 230 from NAGA.

Im also a fan of GF piping. Mainly because I use to work near a Graingers but now just order through Zoro. Does anyone else locally carry them?

  2. Edit: I'm tempted to try Vibrant that they're all taking about at R2R, but kind of don't want to pour in some unknown bottle of goo to try to get the algae gone.  I'm curious to see if it will go on it's own.

The same way I get sucked into watching tv shows I bought a bottle. The hype made me do it! I didn't really have much of an issue to begin. Only a couple spots here and there. After a week I can say it's def doing something. Algae turns dark almost black and then starts falling apart. I't does feel like buying snake oil but hey it's working.

  3. I was talking to a LFS once that mentioned that this has happened before. I was mind blown then let alone now to hear it happened at someone's home. I remember after one of my first posts here a member messaged me that I was welcome to come over and he would show me the ropes. I couldn't be more grateful. Many members have been nice enough to have me over and it's a shame things like this could shy people away from being so inviting. However I would completely understand someone wanting to only do public meetings. Maybe I'm too much of an optimistic but I myself will continue to have faith in people and specially our club.

  4. Time to upgrade to the NYOS 220. Rated to 500 gallons.

That's the plan! I really like this 160 so I have my sights on the 220.

Here it is (from Justin). My numbers were off but the idea was correct. I use Escobal's formula for skimmer contact time. The rule is roughly .75x/hr of water throughput, where x=total system volume. So our 200 gallon rating for the CS1 assumes about 150gph through the skimmer. Ideally you would have a 2 minute dwell time in the skimmer body for optimium contact of bubbles with organics-laden water. 150gph = 2.5gpm, or roughly a 5 gallon skimmer body volume. The CS1 isn't quite that big, as realistic space constraints do factor in. Also, more efficient pumps capable of producing more and finer bubbles help offset the chamber size. In short, adding even an "undersized" CS1 on a 300 gallon system will help a whole lot compared to no skimmer, since budget is a factor. You could increase throughput to 225gph on the CS1 without a problem.

Ok that makes sense comes down to contact time. Thanks for digging that up.
  5. I can how a skimmer can be oversized running a tank too clean but what makes one too small? Is it just skimmer cup filling too quick? Not enough contact time?

I ask because originally I wanted to run 2 separate systems. After much thought it will be much cheaper to tie both tanks into one sump. I don't have to buy double the equipment and gain the stability of a larger system. The skimmer (Nyos 160) I currently have is running on a 100g rated for 250g. It will eventually be tying into a 220. I figure I can get away with running it for some time until stocking levels force me to upgrade?

  6. Cobalt's exploding was a known issue for some time mostly with the 200w version. They apparently fixed the issue. I have a 150w version I'm using in my AIO. I felt comfortable enough with it after speaking to them at Macna last year. It's hard to beat the form factor.
