  1. My tests are all coming up good. I think I really just need a par meter to dial this new light in. Ive just had a bad year so far with personal crap so haven’t been able to put the time needed to fix it.

  2. About 6 months ago I bought a kessel Ap9x which was a significant upgrade from my USA light. However, I’ve got nothing but brown and cyano algae blooms and even coraline algae stopped growing on my glass so I think the settings are jacked. Anyone in the stafford area have a par meter and the time to show me how to dial it in? I will literally pay someone for help.

  3. Hey WAMAS! hope everyone is doing well in these trying times.

Quick question, this started out as a normal looking sponge but then started growing ugly and stringy.  Is this bad for my tank?  Should I remove it?  Is there a fish or invert that would eat it?  thanks for any help.

  4. Excess bacteria most likely, ride it out. Are you running biopellets?

Setting up a tank again after 5 years off so I’m a newb again. I started filling up the tank yesterday and woke up to this white hairy webbing all over the place. What is this? Is it just an algae bloom? Should I keep going or star over?

Pizzaguy has his sump in the garage. Justin from Avast Marine (aka ctenophore here on the forum) used to have the majority of his tank in the garage (one panel was built into the wall of the house), I believe. Years ago, I think that Dan (dandy7200, also from Avast Marine) had a sump outside in a shed.

Thanks for the reply, but I think i've convinced my wife to let me put it in the basement!  Now I'm looking at a 200ish gallon tank.  Been looking at the platinum series tanks on the ATM website...  Anyone have any experience with these?  https://www.acrylicaquariums.com/store/platinum-line-aquariums

  7. So far no aggression shown from any of my three.  The purple finally came out of hiding and is doing well.  The only problem i'm having is they are the only fish that havent mastered the art of flake food fighting.  They dont even attempt to get into the mix when the autofeeder goes off...  I think the only food they get are a little bit of scraps and the frozen stuff I feed every other day.  They don't seem to be starving or anything though.

  8. If you looked at the PAR meter thread, you might have seen where I told Frankie G that it's useless.

I know him personally, so I felt I could make a response of that nature on the forums.

We spoke on the phone today about the subject and I've come to the conclusion that the PAR meter is nothing more than a toy that's fun to play with.

At one time I was excited to play with it and I took all sorts of measurements with all sorts of tanks and light systems and then I passed it on. Many people did the same. But yet we all failed to do one important thing:

    Validate the results.

Sure, we got some numbers here and there, hither and yon but there's simply never been an attempt to define the light requirements of any given coral. I told this to Frank today and I'm convincing myself that it's true.

    What say you?

    Toy or Tool?

I have never used a PAR meter, but commend you on the use of these two words.  Well done sir...  well done...

  9. Disclaimer, this is what I know of...and I certainly don't know about everything

F&F has a QT process, a good one too from all accounts I've heard. They've posted it somewhere and you can probably find it. It seems like a lot of people trust the methods Sean uses as he does a lot of preventative treatment...profilactic treatment. (I've not bought fish here, Ashburn seems so far away)

BRK has a process, they've posted and you can probably find it. Look for their upcoming presentation that they talked about recently (I think in the BRK forum pages)...hopefully we hear it is happening soon. (I have bought fish here, who have remained healthy)

Quantum has a QT process, but they treat only as needed as I understand it. You pay extra for the QT treatment and they replace the first replacement fish if something happens. (I've not bought fish here, at least not yet)

Marine Scene I think does something, but I can't remember any details. (I bought my first local fish here a year and half ago as ORA supplied. They have remained healthy)

Dale City Petco quarantines all their fish by placing them in their store, so that you know where the sick fish are by using their website and looking for the store address. ;-) (I have not bought fish here, but have seen several sick fish for sale...in addition to what must be some healthy ones)

Funny as H-E-double hockey sticks bro! lol

  10. So seriously...  I get this dark green sludge from my skimmer.  I clean it every saturday...  Why does it not smell?  I hear peeps complaining that it is gawd awful for them to clean their skimmer.  I want my poop to stink!  What gives?

Could it be livestock?  I don't have any large carnivors...  and only 10 small fish and 2 medium fish in about 300 gallons TSV.

Or maybe my nostrils don't work?  and what is supposed to smell bad smells good?  That would explain my foot fetish I guess...

  11. Perhaps we should set up a thread screening process.  It would have to be cleared by 5 different senior posters...  All of which have to be over 1000 posts.  Each Senior poster will scan each new thread for any annoying newbiness, and deem whether it is useful enough to be posted.  They could each have a colored star, and if the thread is good enough will collect ALL FIVE STARS, and maybe all five of the stars can form like a "rainbow brite star" or something like that, showing that it is approved by the greatest master reefers the world has ever known!

I of course am joking...  but only because I don't think this post would actually make it to that fifth star...  Its a toughy.

  12. I think the problem is that we were a sleepy little community...we didn't really have much new stuff going on and the constant posters have a relationship with each other that ends with banter based mostly on familiarity.  Most have been in the hobby a long time or long enough that the start up issues are usually stable and when there is something technical etc it does get discussed and there is plenty to learn...I just don't think there is a proportional amount of those posts compared to the more lighthearted ones...I don't see a problem with that honestly.

When the community got shaken up by a couple of new members that moved into the neighborhood and woke the sleepy neighbors up by their loud music and constant ringing of others doorbells it agitated the quiet that everyone had gotten used to.  The old neighbors are annoyed that whenever the doorbell rings with questions that are easily answered with research if the newbies had bothered to try on their own.  And that sparks the nasties to appear. Then the sides get taken and it takes a while for the newbies to settle down and learn to help themselves as well as asking others.....balance....and it takes the sleepy neighbors time to accept the new generation and have patience and type over and over again....research....read....slow down....

At some point we will get back to sleepy and slow learning and banter...and that to me is a nice neighborhood to live in....and for those like Piper who are just over it....put up a fence....they make nice neighbors too.....

I agree, it is a difficult balance to achieve to make a newbie feel welcome, while also telling him that his question is easily answered with a little research.  I am guilty of asking stupid questions, but I usually figure out that the question is stupid when no one replies.  This tells me A) its either a dumb question, or B) It is easily answered with the magical google.

So if its someone like me who should know better, just ignore the dumb question.  But if its a guy with 2 posts, maybe a "welcome to the forums, here is a link for you" would be better...
