  1. ADA is one of the premier companys. There are many custom tank builders as well as other high end companies. AGE, Miracles, ELOS etc.. DeepBlue tanks are very nice, very affordable, and not very hard to get. Its my understanding that stores who are dealers of DeepBlue means you dont have to pay the shipping (not 100% on that). Last time I looked into one I was quoted around $400 for the 75g. If im not mistaken Fins & Feathers, BRK and Petland (all vendor emebers) are DeepBlue dealers. Centreville aquarium also carries them.

DeepBlue might be a viable option then. Let me see what I can find.

  2. Hello WAMAS! As some of you can probably see from the WTB/Sell/Trade forum I have to sell my 180 Gallon tank. This is due to family moving into my home and needing the room to accommodate my new guests *grumble*. I do not want to leave the hobby though, I love aquariums and everything involved. As such, I want to start fresh and build a smaller, rimless tank that can house two clowns and some corals. Space is limited, so I will have approximately 4' available to me. I want to post here and ask the community to help me put together plans on building a system on a budget. I hope to use the proceeds from the sale of my larger system for this setup.

I will document my build process and plans here as things progress.

  3. I have such a long way to go, making many mistakes as I move towards the dream aquarium I have pictured in my head. I just finished the Aquascape, and I'm a little worried about it. I tried creating many escape tunnels, calm areas and caves when putting this together. I also tried to make sure I have ample area to place coral when the time comes. Any feedback is appreciated.

  4. I'm a new aquarist, and I am a month into my first tank - a 180 gallon with 40 gallon sump. Pretty big for a first tank, but my buddy always wished he had started big and so I did. Regardless, I was able to score some really premium fiji rock with coraline algae from him. The rock is great, happy to have them in my tank, but what I'm concerned about is this starfish that came along for the ride. I'm not sure what it is. Is it safe for my tank? Does anyone know what kind of starfish it is? What does it eat? Hopefully not my watchman Goby!

  5. Yes, you'll almost certainly want more flow in your display tank. I wouldn't, however, try to run it all through the sump. Use powerheads in the tank or a closed loop. An 1800 gph pump, with head pressure, will net you less than 1800 gph through your sump. You're probably getting much less out of the 950 gph pump than you think when you consider all of the losses (head pressure and friction being two).

I'm looking forward to some pictures!

I'll have some pictures up tonight. I'm fairly worried about the return pump as you mentioned. I'd need a lot more flow to keep a health reef and avoid dead spots. :(

  6. Welcome to the club!! The 180 is a great tank to start with. The 950gph pump is a little small unless you plan to add more in tank flow with powerheads. What type of lighting do you have, T5, Metal halide, or something else?

T5 perhaps? I'm really not sure. I'll take a picture of it tonight and post. I have 4 long bulbs and a strip of blue LED's in my Corallife lighting unit.

  7. Hello folks, I'm new to WAMAS and I'm starting my first Aquarium. I have always loved and admired saltwater wildlife and reefs in general, the Discovery Channel has always been a go to staple in my house. I'm starting my Aquarist hobby with a 180 gallon reef ready tank. The sump/fuge is a custom acrylic job that I'm a little iffy about. I have a 950 gph return pump which I have read is a little weak for my setup. I imagine I'll need atleast 1800 gph? I have 1 working Koralia pump for my tank, and my lighting seems to be ok (corallife 60" all inclusive unit). My Skimmer is by Red Sea and I'm not sure about out's effectiveness just yet.

I'm very new to this, and so far the highlight of my day is coming home to see how much water my RODI unit has made so far. I look forward to sharing the rest of my successes and failures with the WAMAS community. :)
