  1. Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know if someone has come out with T5 form-factor LEDs that would be a 1:1 replacement for T5 bulbs? It seems to me that this would be a no-brainer in terms of market niche - even if you put the driver/transformer in a second "T5," since most lights are multiples of two - but I haven't found them. Just curious.

  2. So I am already running biopellets in a BRS reactor and recently picked up a second BRS reactor from another WAMAS member to run carbon. I would like to run them in-line, and figure if they need different flow rates I can place the higher-flow unit first and then use a T-fitting with a ball valve to dump excess flow for the second. My question is, for such a configuration, which should come first, the carbon or biopellets?  :why:Why that sequence, and what are the downsides if not followed? If one wanted to go one more step and run GFO as well, then what would the sequence be (and why)?

  3. Not to hijack this thread, but what do reefers do who put net covers on their tanks, but have overflows?

I can't speak for everyone, but on my tanks with overflows I made the screen covers a little "short" and then cut down some eggcrate to fill in the gap. Seems to work pretty well.

  4. Generally there should be something about replacement timing in the instructions. As John stated, I think they are somewhat like T5s in that they become significantly less effective after a given period even if light is still coming out (although I'm not sure offhand what that time period is). As to whether it's still operating, I know at least some of them have little ports or windows that you can view to see if the bulb is still producing light.

  5. Do the mesh ones do as good of a job?

So does a bubble trap catch detritus as well or just stop the bubbles?

In my experience, the mesh ones are a little less efficient but take 3-4 times as long to clog before you have to change them. They turn inside out in a snap, and I can wash them out in the sink inside of about five minutes.

As to the bubble trap - to the extent it slows the flow, some of the detritus will settle out, but probably only the biggest/heaviest stuff. Of course, the very fine, very light stuff probably can also serve as food for filter feeders as well, so it's something of a trade-off.

  6. How old is the fish? Mine is developing something similar, although not to the extent that yours is. In my case, I think it is just a natural change due to the fish aging.

This fish is about five years old.

Is it hosted by coral? Looks like coral stings.

These have tried for several months to host in some green & white discoma mushrooms, and just recently (within the last week to 10 days) have been trying to host in the Duncan. But the spots started before the move to the Duncan.

  7. I have noticed recently that our female false percula clown is developing spots (pics below). I don't believe they are disease, but I am not sure. There haven't been any major changes in the tank recently. Any ideas?

  8. Hey guys,

I teach middle school at a small private school in laurel. I got approval to setup a small tank in the classroom. The students are very interested in saltwater aquariums. One has even gotten her parents to setup one for her with my guidance. I'm looking for a smaller easy to keep tank for now. If anyone has anything lying around I would appreciate it!

    Thank you!

    PM sent

  9. we have been testing a few PAR38 LED bulbs over the last few months and have settled on a design and bulb that we now want to share with the rest of the community.

      ...

the sale ends 10/12 so if interested just post up here or shoot us a PM with your first name, how many, and your email; we'll take care of the rest - thanks!

OK, I just spotted this, but (pending Spousal approval) is it too late to sign on? While my 'fuge seems to be doing reasonably well, my wife has been looking to redo some of her house plants, including a dwarf Orange tree, and this could be just the thing.

  10. Recently I've noticed some detritus buildup in my "aggressive" tank. It's not technically a FOWLR, as I have a couple of large Mexican Turbos and a Tiger Cowrie for algae control, but they don't seem to be doing much on the other stuff. My flow pattern seems to do a reasonably good job of keeping things in suspension, but obviously the overflow isn't getting everything.

If this was a reef tank I'd probably add a bunch of smaller snails (esp. nasarrius) and/or various hermits. However, these would just be a snack for the main inhabitants of this tank - a Humu Trigger (~4-5"), Snowflake Moray (24"+) - along with a Blue Velvet Damsel, Valentini Puffer and Falco Hawkfish (each about 3"). I don't know how a conch would do, as the flow keeps the bottom pretty clean; while they can and do climb, I'm guessing that probably shouldn't be their primary mode of operation, as it would be here.

    Suggestions are welcome. :bluefish:

  11. Have you checked out the long-running thread on various T5 configurations over at Reef Central? This thread's been going a long time and has been split many times over the years, but you may be able to glean some thoughts and rationale for various configurations from it.

Exactly the suggestion I was going to make. It may take a bit of scrolling but you'll certainly find recommendations for a 6-bulb unit.

  12. The Kitsap Peninsula...we still have houses in Poulsbo and Silverdale...

Most people don't know there really is a peninsula in between Seattle and the Olympic national forest, lol but it's beautiful there and I can't wait to get back!

Back in the 90s I interviewed for a job on Whidbey Island - my wife was very hopeful but it didn't happen. That same year we also visited the San Juan Islands there in Puget Sound, but it turned out to be the one day that entire season there were no whale sightings anywhere  :why: .

  13. Where in Washington State? I grew up in Walla Walla (yes, it's a real place, SE corner of the state). Certainly a lot hotter here; at least there the humidity stayed low when the temperature climbed in the summer.

That said, I'm also looking at how to cut down on my aquarium power footprint; while I haven't done a full calculation, it's probably at least in part from "don't ask the question if you can't stand the answer." At least I'm not running metal halides (they set off my wife's migraines).

  14. I'm running the basic BRS biopellet reactor with BRS pellets. I started with an MJ1200 as the feed pump but performance was uneven, and then switched to a manifold from my main circulation pump (Mag12). I've had some issues with the clogging of the inlet/outlet screens for the pellet vessel, but inadequate maintenance on my part is likely at least partially responsible for that. When I've kept it running properly it's reduced or eliminated most nuisance algae, and don't believe I have seen any resultant ill effects on my SPS.

  15. I have two colonies, one is about 1/3 down in the tank (standard 75) and one about 2/3 down. I'd say flow is probably low to moderate. I don't know if these are "optimum" conditions, but they've both grown well - the one in the higher light probably a bit more.

  16. So, how does one grow a tiny frag into those large rounded colonies?  Is that a large round rock that you mount them to?  Or does their skeleton just grow that way?  Where does one find such plugs?

I think they just grow that way; at least both of mine have. As to mounting, I used epoxy putty on the base of the colony and put them where I wanted on the reef, and it seems to have worked well.
