  1. Sorry to hear about your seahorse.

Any idea what killed it? Any spots, lesions, etc on it? It could have been a bacterial infection. I know these are very common in seahorses especially when tank temps are hotter (more that 76). Anyway I'd keep a close eye on your girl and if she acts lethargic or goes off her food you might want to consider treating her. Don't want to scare you but I'd hate to see you loose the other horse to if its something infectious. If you do need to treat let me know...I have the antibiotics you'll need and would be happy to share.

Thank you so much. I have no idea whatsoever. There were no spots or lesions or anything of the sort. I got them on Thursday and she died last night. I'm keeping a close eye on the other one, definitely. Just fed her in fact, and she's quite the little piglet.

I spent a long time on the phone with Jorge from Draco and he thinks that because most Kuda are pen-raised (which is STILL considered captive bred), they come in with the same kinds of crud that regular wild caught SHs have, so it's a crap shoot. The man certainly knows his stuff. I'd really like to set up an erectus tank someday with his critters.

It's really upsetting to think that millions of these beautiful creatures are ground into powder each year for Chinese medicine.

  2. I have no idea what happened. One pony is happy and eating like a pig, the other started getting lethargic on Sunday afternoon and was gone last night. Of course, I'm pretty broken up about it.

I had them in my aquapod 24, pH 8.2, salinity 1.022, nitrates 0, nitrites 0, ammonia 0, feeding frozen mysis, living with 2 yashia gobis some blue knuckle crabs and a feather duster.

So I read this morning that seahorses are very sociable creatures, so I went looking for another Kuda to make my remaining kid happy. Seems nobody has CB kudas, not even Draco (who explained to me that the Asian market has made it completely un-economical to continue breeding them since people often buy for price and not for quality). The guy at Draco told me that mixing species wouldn't give the one Kuda the socialization she would likely need, so forget that idea and keep looking for another Kuda friend, even if WC.

I'm seriously bummed that I would lose a pony, and secondarily bummed that it's going to be a chore to find a friend for the remaining one.

At least the 180 is pretty happy (knocking wood vigorously).

Oh, the remaining pony has decided that the pH probe is her favorite hitching post :-) Will try the mangrove idea with the egg crate or suction cups soon anyway because it seems cool.

  3. Dead Coral may have sharp edges to hurt the 'ponies'.... I have fake plants for my dwarf seahorses.....

How ADORABLE!!!! I'll get some of those and give them a try. Thanks. Didn't want to put a gorgonian in there since my last one met an untimely demise at my hands. The flow in the tank may not be enough for a gorgonia.

  4. Anyone got any ideas for easy to deal with hitching posts for little seahorses? I know that many corals can be dangerous to the little guys. Seems my very difficult to deal with and horribly hard to grow fake corals are too thick for their itsy bitsy tails :-).

    I love my ponies :-)

  5. Hiya peoples. Yeah, it's been a long time. Yep, I still have tanks. My 180 is doing great. Got a bit of hair algae but that's slowly being taken care of by my brandy new Magnificent Foxface. Anyway, I want to pick up a new point and shoot small non SLR camera I can just grab and go with while my D100 is in the shop. I'd love something I can just stuff in a purse and go with. Of course, I also want it to be capable of good tank pix (so preferably macro capable).

So what cha'all think? Got any suggestions? Price is not as important as quality.

    Thanks, as always.

  6. Jawfish often hide all day and come out for short periods at night, generally just to grab something and dart back in the hole. It's not surprising you haven't seen them. Once they become more accustomed to the place they'll come out. I had two that I loved that I lost from my heat controller malfunction. Very ad. I'd like to get more, but I dn't have enough sand in my system. Perhaps that will change :-).

  7. The happy fun 180 is chugging along, although I haven't written in quite some time due to being busy with this thing called "life." Things started looking rotten yesterday and Sean came and fixed the clogged protein filter so now is all well again. Three of the 4 clownfish are hosting a seabae anemone (the poor 4th one left alone and bereft). The corals are growing happily (cept for one SPF frag I killed accidentally. Drat. My hippo tang is growing quickly. I got a male blue throat trigger who is very happy. My copper banded butterfly, powder brown tang and potters angel are all doing well thusfar. Hopefully all will now be well again.

Still haven't set up the fish only or the seahorse tank. Busy busy.

  8. I have frags on the frag tank so i am setting up a new QT tank

Keep a close eye on the pH while you're doing hypo. And don't forget to bring it down slowly, and bring it back up even more slowly. Let me know if there's anything I can add, since I've been through this. It's certainly not much fun, but it does work.

  9. I got two tangs yesterday from the group buy and one of them was really stressed out. I didnt have time last night to setup a QT and put them in my frag tank. Now one has ick! Should i QT the two tangs? Or am i wasting my time since the frag tank is plumbed to the rest of the system that has other fish in it? Is Hypo the best for fish that are still stressed?

I'm really sorry to hear that your fish have this. From everything I have researched, hypo is actually good for fish that are stressed because their bodies don't have to work quite as hard to maintain their own cellular integrity as their internal salinity is generally lower than the water's. But don't discount the added stress of moving the fish to another location to do the hypo.

Hopefully someone with a lot more experience than I have will chime in to help.

  10. Aqua C Remora , i used one on a 46gal bow and it was the dogs B*****ks

Get it from Premium aquatics, UPS ground is only 2 days and costs about $9

extremely easy to use and clean and uses the ever popular and reliable Maxijet 1200

    HTH

I agree with the AquaC Remora. It kicks butt. I really like mine, takes no plumbing, and just hangs over the side. Cleaning is VERY easy (check out the ease of cleaning on all skimmers before you buy....some are much more annoying than others).

  11. Looks really nice! As for the clowns, the male is not going to hide. He will be submissive and either she will accept him and only beat the crap out of him every now and then (the sign of love) or she will not accept him and just end up killing him......wait I just looked at your picture again, how many clowns do you have it that tank?

Thanks for the compliments. I have 4 clowns in there, 2 black and white, 2 "regular." The tank is 180 gallons. 3 of them hang together with the male staying away in a place he can dive behind the rocks. They all used to get along SO well! They even have 3 anemones to choose from. Grumble. Any ideas?

  12. Got the kids all moved over to the 180, drained the 120, scooped out the sand for hopeful later use, have the ACIII pro set up on the web, frags in place, gorgonia happy. Only issue s that my female black and white percula is beating up the male, and he doesn't yet have the sense to go hide in the rocks. Hopefully he'll figure that out eventually or I'll have to move him.

  13. Heh, ever since the AC3 I think all friends and family have given up hope. My FreeBSD server that used to "simply" be a fileserver, infrastructure host, and music server now runs Nagios (an open source monitoring system) that tracks the status of the fish tank and sends out alerts when parameters go out of whack. It also collects metrics and graphs values that are exported to my externally facing web site along with pictures from my reefcam.

I'm far, far, gone at this point. There's no return.

REALLY? Does this run on OS X do you know? How difficult is it to interface to the AC3? Oh that sounds cool! Yeah, ok.... I'm addicted too.

  14. Have fun in upstate. Though I don't think you are a full reef junkie until you buy something like a aquacontroller that will send you email/text updates with status of your tank. Now if I can just convince dhoch to come to my place and help me finish setting up my control I have had since sept. 22. it's look at that, I have had it for 3 months and not set it up yet, what am I thinking.

What?!?!?!?! Well, you just have to give it to ME then :-). Dhoch has helped me set up mine without even being here, through messages. I believe it comes with this thing called a manual :-). Although cryptic and relatively crappy the combination of that, Reef Central's Neptune forum and dhoch got mine set up. My only question remaining is whether to get a AC jr. or an ACIII for my fish only that I'm going to set up soon as the hypo is finished.

I have the ACIII pro set up to send alarms to my email, and the web access is working. Hooray. I just have to figure out whether the internet access thing is completely necessary (I'm leaning towards yes). So, once I figure that out, I'll ask Johnny to get me the appropriate one.
