  1. WHAT DID YOU SAY?? :wig:

Give him a time out for now! :lol2:

He says "but that's a BAD thing" :-)

Yes, the trickle filtration is gone now. The tank is a 120 with 40 lbs live sand (over another 40 of crushed coral) and 120 lbs of live rock. The main pump is 1200 gph and blew all the fish to one side of the tank while we were adjusting it. I also have 2 maxjet 1200s in there, but you know, I think the fish may decide there's a hurricane going on in there and they want to move out. The old sump system before the DH (dearest husband) got hold of it is on my reef blog at http://web.mac.com/mikkibarry. If you click on tank pics there are all the purty tank pix along with the sump. I'm taking some now of the new plumbing and will let you know when they're up.... if I can get husband away from the tank long enough for me to even take pictures. The last iteration of "fixes" were to get rid of the intermittent annoying water sound that made everyone in the room simultaneously feel the urge to go to the bathroom :-).

  2. In my 120 tank, we had noticed lots of difficulty with bubbles, etc. The old setup had water coming through floss into a trickle plate, through an empty acrylic cube, into another empty acrylic cube underneath it, which would feed into an overflow, which fed into the return chamber which was another acrylic cube. The "I love sawing up PVC pipes" husband thought that it would be a much better set up if he took out the tricle plate, replummed things, and put the protein skimmer in the first chamber, so the water flow goes into the protein skimmer chamber, then into the overflow, then into the return. Our newbie question is - are we missing anything by not having mechanical filtration? The hose from the tank doesn't trickle the water through anything so there is no gas exchange until it hits the overflow.

Should we put live rock into the overflow chamber? Should we put carbon into the overflow chamber? Will there be problems with particulates coming into the sump now that there's no floss to stop it? The next plan is adding a chamber for a refugium that he plans to put before the protein skimmer. I am concerned that the protein skimmer would skim out the really good stuff coming out of the refugium. Should I take the saw and glue away from the husband? He's already successfully modified the tank by removing the overflow (and the siphon which offended him) and drilling holes into my tank and doing some odd kind of plumbing thing. I'll take pictures sometime, but not today because I'm exhausted after bailing out sumps and carrying buckets.

  3. It's already too late! :lol2:

Just be glad that he shares an interest in your hobby, even if it is from a Tim the Toolman perspective. It could be much worse!

You're right. It could be worse. I shut my pumps off to do some feeding and my sump overflowed. He says, "oh, I'll fix that....by the way, want me to build you a refugium?" Well of COURSE I do, silly man. "I'll just have to change some of my plumbing around, and....."

I'm missing SO much with the aquapod all in one thing. Watching him do modifications is almost as fun as watching reef critters......almost :-).

  4. they should all be small-med colony size....im sure there will be some variation. I have been waiting a few months for these corals to be available. I have been promised, CITES permitting, that i should be able to receive a monthly shipment similiar in size on a monthly basis.

Yes, we can arrange something as far as reserving piece via photo and pay-pal....might need a lil help with setting up paypal cuz I am technology defficient!

    Sean

Paypal is easy. Even I can do it. Thanks for the help this weekend, by the way Sean. The kid's Eclipse 12 is working again, and that pretty blue mushroom is happy in my Aquapod 24.

Looking forward to seeing the new stuff.

  5. I have purchase fish from them in the past and must say I'm very pleased with my purchases.

Ditto on corals. I bought a beginner's pack from them and the plate coral died within a week. I called them and they refunded the money for it. I do have to say that I like actually seeing a piece before I buy it however.

  6. I would stay away from sps for now. I have noticed the pygmy angels seem to leave most lps and softies alone, however, some softies can be dangerous in a tank when stressed. I.e. releasing toxins and such things. Euphilia, green star polyps, mushrooms, zooanthids, button polyps..... Good luck!

    Thomas

p.s. You don't need a syringe for the anemone, just put the kalkwasser mix in a dropper and squirt directly on top of the thing. I have read that if you tear the skin, it could actually help spread them. I can't say I have seen it first hand, but I don't pierce them and I have pretty good luck. FWIW

Thanks. I'll do some research. Right now I'm waiting for the mad scientist husband who continually says "this is YOUR hobby" then I catch him drilling holes in my tank and playing with the plumbing. He says he's going to rework my sump. I am afraid.... very afraid. Anyone near Great Falls who wants to send the man a reality check before it's too late? :-)

  7. You may have to do that more than once, keep and eye out. By the way, if they spread, they sting corals, killing all they touch. No need to feel sad. unless you are loonking to keep a species only tank. :)

Naw, not yet. I'm now figuring out what kinds of pretty corals I want in my tank, picking pretty ones with help from Marine Scene and a couple mail order. I would be most annoyed if something decided to kill them before I figure out what I'm doing.

We go on vacation in a couple weeks, and when we return.... time to populate the 120 gallon tank with coral. Got any suggestions for stuff that a flame angel won't find unbelievably yummy?

  8. Kill'm quick!

I usually kept a small plastic container around with a tablespoon full of kalk powder in a little water that would still allow to go through needled syringe and keep that handy for anytime you see one of these buggers around!

Hit them fast, hard and often until you see them no more! :hammer:

So I would actually need a needled syringe to do this? They're kinda pretty :-). I have another one that looks like a aiptasia. Does one do the same to it? I hate the idea of killing something, but if that's what I gotta do....

  9. Hello everyone. Just found the group's site after having had my tanks for about 2 months now. I'm new to all of this so the learning curve looks quite steep from here, but I'm trying anyway :-). I have an aquapod 24 with sunpod lighting, and an acrylic 120 with protein skimmer, sump system, and 2 maxjet powerheads. The aquapod is where I'm starting to learn about coral, purchasing frags and small bits from various places and seeing how they work. I have a few gobis in the tank with them, as well as peppermint shrimp, hermits, and snails. So far so good, mostly, although I lost a short tentacle plate coral recently. Boo hiss.

The 120 currently has no corals (til we get back from vacation end of Sept) a purple tang, flame angel, jawfish, watchman gobi, flame angel, pair of wrasses whose name I forget, pair of false perculas, and pair of black and white perculas (along with hermits).

My question is - is this anemone that rode in on a rock actually an evil majano, or an ok BTA? There have been plenty of votes on both sides, and I am confused. Thanks!post-1002-1156278086_thumb.gif
