There is no 1 best way to do a refugium.

But there are lots of great ways to do refugiums.

  • bare bottom chaeto ball
  • rubble bottom caulerpa fuge
  • rubble bottom Halymenia
  • sand and miracle mud bottom with caulerpa
  • sand and miracle mud bottom with Halymenia  (My prefered method)
  • deep sand and miracle mud bottom with caulerpa

I've been having great luck with Caulerpa serrulata. It's a pretty macro that's easy to take care of, but I don't use it specifically for exporting nutrients so much as pod space (though it's not bad for that either).

If you like the chaeto ball, there was a thread awhile back on the DIY chaeto bucket system that looks really cool. Found here

Best way for starting a fuge? Get a handful of macro/pods from someone here on Wamas, then poor a glass and relax.
