Nice setup, I would remove the lid as it blocks light. I would take advantage of the evaporation. Use Kalk in your ATO. Just my .02 .

Thank you! I test for Calcium and Alkalinity with my Hanna checkers. I do have kalk, but I’ve never used it. In my small display I control it through water changes.

I’m going to keep the lights off and the lid on while it’s cycling. The tank is in my basement so I’d like to keep evaporation to a minimum at least for the next month while I let the tank mature.

Thanks for the advice.

Tagging along as well. I love shallow tanks!

I bought filter socks and more reef-roids from BRS last week and also an inkbird from SaltwaterAquarium yesterday.  The inkbird was 10% off, plus I had a $6 store credit, and $5 in points to cash in.  Win win.  Hopefully the orders have freebies as both companies were/are running big giveaways and promos.

Woke up in a foggy haze this morning after working late. Installed my filter socks from BRS. I wouldn’t say that they fit...but I wouldn’t say that they don’t. Chaeto is growing.

Ammonia was slightly detectable two days ago.

Any reason your running skimmer, lights, and macro while trying to cycle?

This is the first skimmer I’ve ever used so I decided to learn how to use it when no lives were at stake.

The tank is cycling without lights aside from the refugium light.

I’m growing the Chaeto because I want to see if it can prevent/eliminate a large nitrate spike after the cycle is complete. Will it prolong the cycle? Will it shorten it? Will there be no effect? We’ll see!

Got it. I suspect it will prolong your cycle, or at the least lead you to inaccurate numbers when trying to determine what stage it's in.

Either way, I'm a firm believer that there are many ways to get the same job done, and maybe you're onto a new cycling method.

I think BRS has “investigated” it. I know I’ve seen a video not long ago but clearly I forget the outcome! I’m patient. I’m enjoying the setup and slowly adding the dosing equipment, temperature control, etc. that I will inevitably need.

Thanks for following along!

Remember bacteria grows faster in the dark. I have used both methods and no lights is faster and less blooms.  I have also setup a reef in a day. (not recommended ) Tagging Along looking sweet!!! BTW check out @telegraham on youtube he has a great channel .

Thanks. I’ve sought and received wise advice from him before. I have ceramic media and rocks from my other aquariums in the sump so hopefully the bacteria starts populating quickly.
