ReeferMan October 21, 2005 October 21, 2005 Does anyone know if a snowflake eel and maxima clam can live together. I know that eel's will each shrimp and crabs but not to sure about clams. If they can't anyone looking at getting a @ foot snowflake? let me know
davelin315 October 21, 2005 October 21, 2005 Eels are very opportunistic and I have fed eels pieces of clam before. That said, I'm not sure if a snowflake would eat a clam or not. I don't know that they necessarily hunt clams, but I do know that if offered a piece of clam they would eat it. Not sure I helped much, but I would not put my money on the eel not eating the clam. Snowflakes of all eels are very calm and sedate, but an eel is an eel. I wouldn't put one in a reef, and I don't think I'd trust one with a clam. Good luck in finding out!
dhoch October 21, 2005 October 21, 2005 You can ask my chainlink eel (about 24") and the maxima and dersa clams I have in my reef. No problems here... In fact I have shrimp (2 skunks, 2 fire, 1 banded) as well as small fish (clowns, mandarin, blenny). My take is this, there are no guarantees in this hobby with animals... as they have different personalities, but I would say that getting them small and training them where food comes from works really well. Mine is 2.5 years old at this point and is a great inhabitant. Dave
ReeferMan October 21, 2005 Author October 21, 2005 Yeah he actually never bothers any of his tankmates. I tried to see if he would even bite me and he seems pretty calm unless food is in the tank. This is when he will open his mouth (not biting) but chase other fish from the food. I dont have any shrimp in my tank so i cant say if he would eat them or not. I do have snails, hermits, starfish and a urchin that he has never bothered. He has his own little home and i doubt he would bother it but just wanted to check if anyone has had a prob when them bothering clams before i put him in there.
