I run them dawn and dusk, 3 hours before MH and 3 hours after MH.

Update on my tank recovery. The really good news is that nothing else has died since the first massive water change. It seems also that my largest orange monti cap is showing signs of recovery.

 

Now after the few water changes that I did in the following week of the crash, Ammonia, nitrites and nitrates were at 0. But in fact, it was only due to the large volumes of water change, the tank was going thropugh a mini cycle. I guess that was to be expected. Last Sunday I picked 4 jugs of pre mixed Nutri-SeaWater from Chip, which were about 17 gal worth of water and did a water change with it. Boy oh boy!!!! That stuff is really worth every penny. Sunday afternoon, ammonia was still around 0.25. I didn't bother testing for nitrites since they would show up anyway, right? Yesterday I picked up new test kits just I got accurate readings. My previous kits were over a year old. To make a long story short, in just 3 days, the test read ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates over 160!!!!

So this water is indeed full of live beneficial bacteria. I did another 30 gal water change (which is about 20% of my system vol) and nitrates read 30 ppm after a few hours.

Last update. Yesterday evening, I tested for nitrates, no water changes and the results were 0. That Nutri-SeaWater is indeed very good. :77: Thanks again Chip

I've used it a few times. When my Rio blew and I needed an abrupt water change (and I didn't know that you were supposed to avoid Rio's like the plague) the Vienna aquarium told me that the tanks that he services all use that and it's muchh better than a mix.

 

'Course someone posted on RC or wherever that there is no way to keep those bateria alive in the container....

 

And apparently the Catalina water was tested and was not benficial for the inhabitants health (disclaimer - I don't recall where the comparison was made, so research it yourself before taking this as fact.)

 

Anyway, where can we get these at a reasonable price though?
