rocko918 February 14, 2012 February 14, 2012 I have a swabbie on my Deltec. The stench from that thing is unbearable!!!! It stunk up the whole house. Wife was not happy. I believe i have an older model, but there is like 10 to 15 holes in the top. Can i cover them us so the stench does not come out? DO the serve a greater purpose?
davelin315 February 14, 2012 February 14, 2012 Hey Bob, is this holes in the skimmer lid you're talking about? If so, the air needs somewhere to escape otherwise the skimmer will create back pressure as the air is being added and push the water column down in the skimmer, stopping it from doing its job. This is just like a skimmate with a shut off - it essentially creates back pressure so that the skimmer doesn't work any longer. If it's just holes in the Swabbie unit itself, I'm not sure why they would be there other than to cool the motor. I think you can add a separate unit to clean the air but not sure how that would work with the swabbie on there (essentially a carbon filter for the outgoing air). I wouldn't suggest covering the holes on a skimmer lid without having some other escape for the air. I had issues with my old ASM G6 skimmer in the past that if I didn't clean it or it decided to go crazy and overfill the collection cup the liquid would create a seal with the design of it and then the whole thing would blow off as the chamber built up too much pressure and sent the lid flying off as it slowly unhooked itself with the vibrations from the pump. This was because the inside lip of the skimmer cup top extended below the neck of the skimmer neck and caused it to "seal" when the water built up enough. Of course, I'm not sure of what you're talking about exactly and don't have a swabbie (yet!) so I'll let them answer for you and see what they say!
Brian Ward February 14, 2012 February 14, 2012 I believe there is a carbon-lid that you can buy which will absorb the smell while still allowing the air to come out.
rocko918 February 14, 2012 Author February 14, 2012 (edited) yes there are a lot of hole in the lid. Maybe i can cover a few and put carbon over the others. Edited February 14, 2012 by rocko918
GraffitiSpotCorals February 14, 2012 February 14, 2012 Yea I bet you can make a carbon filter out of a small bottle conected to a hose on the top of the skimmer and just cover the rest.
