Did You Know?

Ich, or Cryptocaryon irritans, is one of the two most common parasite that attacks the immune system of fish. Signs of infection are rubbing or scratching against the rock or substrate, rapid breathing, loss of appetite, abnormal swimming and especially the telltale white spots.

The spots are usually described as small grains of salt stuck the body and fins of the fish. Ich has an interesting lifecycle in different stages. The stage where the parasite is attached to the fish is called a trophont. The trophont will usually stay attached for about seven days the leaves and becomes a protomont. The protomont travels to the substrate and crawls around for a few hours and as long as 18 hours after it leaves its host (the fish). Once the protomont attaches to a surface, it begins to encyst and is then called a tomont. Dividing inside the cyst are hundreds of daughter parasites, called tomites.

This stage is noninfectious and can last from three to 28 days. Once the tomites hatch they start looking for a host. This stage is called theronts and they must find a host within 24 hours or die. If they find a host they transform into trophonts and this entire process begins all over again.

A few ways to cure ich is to place the affected fish in a quarantine tank and dose with Copper. If this is not practical, there is a reef-safe medication called Kick-Ich. It is a two week treatment that does not kill the Ich, but attacks the stages of its lifecycle not allowing it to continue to breed or host on the fish. If the fish can be caught, giving it a freshwater dip can help kill the parasites off the fish. Dipping the fish daily will continue to kill off any ich that is hosting on the fish, which in turn, will kill the cycle. To do a freshwater dip, use dechlorinated tap water, the same temperature as the tank, in a big enough container. Put the fish in the dip and let it swim around for no less than 5 minutes and even up to 20 minutes. The longer the fish stays in the freshwater, the better to kill the parasites. Once the dip is done, the fish can be placed back in its main tank or in the hospital tank. When dosing any medication, dipping can also be done daily but no more than once a day. Another more natural method to help rid Ich and other parasites from fish is to feed a variety of meaty and veggie foods soaked with vitamins and even garlic extract. Since Ich attacks the immune system of the fish, keeping the fish well fed with a balanced diet will help keep it healthy and happy.
