Cheato in Main Tank

What are the various pros and cons of putting Cheato in the Main/Display tank and not the sump? My sump is not lighted and I am unsure if it will survive in total darkness.

Total darkness and the cheato will die and return the nutrients back into the water.

 

I have a sumpless 60gal with cheato in the main tank, you just need to harvest and keep it from blowing around. If you have vege loving fishes, it may not be sustainable.

Like traveller said, if you have any tangs, etc. - it will likely be snacked upon.

 

IME, it can also get a little messy with small bits of it getting everywhere. But the regular harvesting may help with this.

 

I keep mine in the sump and light it with a 55 watt pc - you can order one of the nano ballasts from hellolights. You can porbably even get away with a lower wattage bulb. Mine grows like it's going out of style under the 55. I have read that others use the Lights of America PCs from Home Depot.

Thanks you both for your response. I do have a Yellow Tang. I will watch closely to see if it gets larger and the cheato ball gets smaller.
