You can see the Alor rock featured in our front 150 gallon display. DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that having a quarantine tank at home will greatly reduce the risk of disease to your fish? Even when a fish looks healthy you never know what type of microscopic parasites or bacteria may be lurking, ready to infest your tank. It's a good idea to set up a small separate tank at home for new fish. A 10 or 20 gallon tank would work for most fish. Use cured live rock for filtration to set up the quarantine tank. A powerhead will be needed as well. Put all new fish in the quarantine tank for at least two weeks. Keep the salinity in the tank low (around 1.019 Specific Gravity) to help ward off parasites. Feed the fish with a garlic supplement and consider using a broad spectrum drug as a preventative against disease. Observe the fish carefully on a daily basis. Be aware of feeding habits, swimming behavior and of course, scale condition. After the two weeks are up and the fish has shown no sign of disease it is safe to add it to your display tank. You may want to give the fish a fresh water dip after acclimation, right before adding it to your tank. Going through all of this work may seem like a hassle, but for those of you who have dealt with disease in your tank before you know that it can be an even bigger hassle (not mention loss) in the display tank once you have an epidemic on your hands! Do you know if your new fish are "clean"? Take care and see you soon! -Kristen Lau The Marine Scene Assistant Manager Retail Sales 293 Sunset Park Drive Herndon, Virginia 20170 703.689.2815
