michaelg October 10, 2003 Share October 10, 2003 Hello Hobbyists! Here's the scoop on the Scene this weekend. What's New? If you are an SPS fan, treat yourself to a peek at our special ordered Acropora heads. We also have some outstanding Hydnophora pieces, a Pocillopora and a gorgeous bright yellow Porites. We were lucky to receive a very impressive batch of Xenia pieces. There are three different variations available. Also impressive is the Fiji live rock that was traded in this week. This rock is covered in coralline algae and feather dusters, and of course it is fully cured. In addition to our usual blue Linkia starfish we also have green and orange Linkia this week. Linkia stars don't hide under rocks so they add a nice splash of color to a reef. There are a few mini Algae Cowries left. A cowry is a hardy, algae eating snail with that beautiful shell you find so often on jewelry and accessories. What's on Sale? All of the fish that aren't in quarantine will be 10% off. Select grade corals are 10% off, buy two and get 15% off, buy three or more and get 20% all of them. Ocean nutrition seaweed strips are 10% off, or get 15% off with the purchase of a garlic or vitamin supplement. What's Cool? The coolest coral of the week is a green Fox Coral, it is a good size and flawless with it's delicate blossom like polyps. Fox corals require high lighting and low flow to thrive. The coolest fish of the week is the Blue Jaw Trigger. This guy is quite docile for a trigger and would be OK in a semi-aggressive environment. Did you know? Did you know that it is important to test your water regularly? Water chemistry can and will change even in a well-established aquarium. The alkalinity, p.H.,and calcium decrease over time, while nitrate and salinity tend to increase. Regular water changes should help to maintain constant parameters. However, without knowing what your water quality is, you may not be doing enough water changes and may need to add buffers to correct the swings. The Marine Scene carries about four different brands of test kits and even has some digital instruments. Not checking the water parameters could lead to fish and coral loss as well as algae blooms, so it is important to check these at least once a week. At The Marine Scene we test our water weekly to be sure to catch any warning signs that might pop up. Do you know what your water parameters are?
