sen5241b January 30, 2009 January 30, 2009 I'm seeing white spots on the edges of my MD's pectoral and back dorsal fins only. There have been no spots on his body. I also, have a Yellow clown goby and a six line wrasse neither of which have any spots. I've read that ich is more likely to attack the body before the fins. Also, MDs, being scale-less, are generally not prone to ich. I'm thinking the white spots may be natural for the MD or its some other condition like fin rot. Any guesses? (BTW, don't take this the wrong way, but if I so much as mention my MD, I get a dozen replies that my MD will starve in my tank. I've had him 4 months and he's fatter now than when I got him, I watch him eat one of several foods every day. I have to scrape the pods off my glass twice a week.)
sen5241b January 31, 2009 Author January 31, 2009 HELP! I added a six line a week ago but he looks fine! Today the edge of his pectoral and tail fins started to show whitish rot along the edges. The last photo shows some white dots on the edges of his upper pectoral fins but he fans these fins very fast and they are hard to photo. There are more of the white spots on his fins than can be seen on the photo. Also, becuase Mandarin Gobies are covered with a slime, some white sand will stick to their skin. Some of the white pecks are sand. I am still doubting its ich becuase all the many photos of ich I've seen don't look like this --but then I've never had a tank disease.
sdah0414 January 31, 2009 January 31, 2009 My clownfish had a similar spot on his side. Had a pair, but the disease killed one of them. I treated the other in QT with a product called Rally and he's been with me for about 2 years now. It's made by Ruby Reef. Don't know if your mandarin has the same thing, but it worked for the clown.
Pat_13 January 31, 2009 January 31, 2009 HELP! I added a six line a week ago but he looks fine! Keep an eye on the six line, if it is what I think it is it will be back in a week or two. Do you have a QT tank? I would put them both in it right away! I am not positive but it looks like ick. They will produce more of a slime coat to try to fend it off. I have also seen cases where it is small air bubbles or sand so try to get a better view of him.
reefhunter January 31, 2009 January 31, 2009 When I got home from vacation I had ick on two of my tangs... I guess reduced feeding or something stressed them out... I had recently added a new fish from BRK... I fed garlic flake heavily for a week and the ick went away... I actually feed garlic flake everyday and all of my fish love it. http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/c1/c3/Garlic-Flake-c45.html This stuff is great. I think it constantly battles disease... kind of like giving your fish vitamins... Looks like htey have a new product that is garlic flake plus http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/c1/c4/Garlic-Plus-c25.html
sen5241b January 31, 2009 Author January 31, 2009 (edited) Apparently MDs are prone to fin rot. See here: MD care sheet Using the "Mardel saltwater fish disease chart" it looks like Saprolegnia (true fungus). The recommend Maroxy and Saltwater Maracyn (an antibiotic). BTW, what is Maroxy?
