Guest hound66 January 28, 2008 Share January 28, 2008 I'm slowing working on upgrading my 29g mixed reef to a 55g or 65g. In addition to switching from a canister to a sump, upgrading my lights from small PCs to T5 and getting a ton more rock and sand, I'm looking into some other things. I've noticed a lot of people with UV. What good would a UV unit do for my tank? Are there any negative side effects like killing brine or pods? Thanks
Brian Ward January 28, 2008 Share January 28, 2008 Brine and pods are both too big to be killed by a UV. UV has many benefits that have been discussed at length in many threads both here and on RC. Reader's Digest version: kills unwanted bacteria and parasites (depending on power and length of exposure), tends to keep the water clearer, can help keep nuisance algea under control by killing the spores, overall contributes to better water quality. Gamma and AquaUV are the 2 preferred brands though many vendors make a decent unit.
