DYK Did you know that a refugium is beneficial to both a reef and fish only systems? A refugium can be of any size and are nothing more than a refuge from predation, which is connected to a larger tank with shared filtration. A refugium is used to grow algae for Natural Nitrate Reduction (NNR), isolate sensitive critters such as Seahorses or to hold/raise food such as copepods and amphipods for the main tank. Most refugia are used for NNR using macroalgaes and caulerpa to feed off the nitrates in the main tank. This also provides hiding and breeding areas for your copepods and amphipods which are a great live food source for picky eaters such as Dragonets. Don
