We have decided to change the Oceanic 180 over to closed loop. We're trying to figure out the best way to deal with the output. There will be an inch and 1/2 pipe coming back into the tank. Sea swirls? Wavemakers? Split into two outputs with plain ole diffusers? What do y'all think?

Go to the Oceans Motions web site and check out this CL system. I am running a OM setup and love it.

By the way, John at BRK carries the Oceans Motions gear.

Very nice! Would a controller do something similar though plus control other things I might need? I'm trying to weigh all of the options. Thanks!

IMO the difference with OM is that you are never starting and stoping anything. Your pump is always on and the OM unit is always on (rotates divertign flow out). A controller can provide many other options as well and I feel that both would make a great system. You can call OM and speak to Paul, he is the owner and great guy. Tell him what you are trying to do and he can walk you through examples that will work for you. I did this and found the conversation to be very very beneficial. He took lots of time with me and walked me through the web site to show me examples. Just another step in the research ladder!

Good luck!!

For a FOWLR I would just keep it simple and use a swirl or wavy sea on the return depending on the pump you use. I use a OM on my closed loop and a sea swirl on the return and the flow is pretty dang random but, this is for a SPS tank. I would honestly try it without anything first and just split the return to a couple nozzles and see if that does what you need (keep fish poop in suspention long enough to get skimmed to overflow  ).

Its not a FOWLR anymore :-). After much thought and a bit of good information and observations from Sean, I'm making the 120 my FOWLR tank after I finish putting the fish through hypo, and turning my aquapod into either a frag tank, a seahorse tank, or a quarantine tank (it's serious overkill for a quarantine tank... but since I need one obviously given what I'm learning about flukes and ich and other naughty things....).

Looky! I think it looks pretty good this way:

I am glad to hear you all like the OM, I just got one for my 90.

I wish I could help you on your setup but I'm still learning in this area as well so I'm going to tag along on this thread.

Thanks, Sandy! This really is a great group for learning lots of stuff. I had no idea about the OM stuff until I read it here.

OM is about a reliable as it gets - going on two years & it's been working like a charm. Really nice is the fac that you can get drums (controls the flow) to suit your needs. It comes with a clean out kit, I've not needed it yet.

.............but.........

That's only if your married to a CL. Good random flow can be had with Tunze stuff - once again reliable as the day is long & less electrical cost.

Overall cost is about the same.

And then you can always take my route - use both ;)

Tried to talk him into just using the Tunze stuff... he seems bent on this. I'll try discussing it again.

Depending on cofiguration & need it works out the same.

An OM 4-way runs in the area of $340 & you toss $250 for a nice pump = $600.

A couple of 6000's an a multi-controller = $761

Tunze use a max of 11w ea, for serious flow from the OM you're looking @ 140w+. Also the Tunze can be re-config'd in a second - just tap a couple of buttons.

You can to Sea Swirls but they'll never see the reliability of either of these & they cost some $$ also. There's those modded maxis - to new know anything yet.
