I would highly recommend you read this article. It discusses in detail setting up a kalk stirrer in a safe manor.

It was a bad day for mushrooms, but a good day for all the other corals in the tank.

I broke the tank down entirely, pulled out every single piece of rock, placed them on the driveway and power washed them. I then monitored the tank closely and watched for any that popped back up. I found a couple a few months later and manually removed them. I have not seen one for years.

My go pro has a case on it that allows me to go diving with it. I mount it to a 1/2" dia piece of PVC and just swing it around in the tank.

Sorry about that. Try now.

I have run the go pro in my tank many times. Here is a video I took right before I eradicated all mushroom style corals from my tank. You can see why in the video.

Remove the rock and pressure wash it. Do not replace the pests. They took over my tank at one point and were very difficult to get rid of.

I have seen many tanks with corals that pop with color not using magic lighting. It often takes time for a coral frag to mature and then color up. The tank also has to have very good, stable parameters and good lighting.
Best of luck

Ha!. It has been a while. I have been so busy with other stuff.
Here is a FTS from last March. I will try to grab one that is a little newer.
Thanks for asking,
Bruce

I just replaced my halides a few days ago and my Austera just started poppin. I am so happy.

I have mine set up like this. So it would be on the output. But that is because I do not feed mine with a pump. I think you could put it on either line in your case.
Actually, mine is set up like this so I can scrub CO2 and raise pH.
-
A peristaltic pump is a good idea. The needle valve will clog over time and flow will be reduced or stopped all together.
Here is a link to a detailed article on how I set mine up.

I read though a lot of the Randall Holmes articles and I'm a bit lost... a lot lost.
I've been doing 25% water changes roughly monthly and can't seem to get my pH much over 7.7 (according to API test kit and <1 no old dbl junction and calibrated pH probe on an apex.)
My Ca and Alk are also a bit low.
It's an IM Fusion 40 gal with a small amount of SPS and LPS that I'm hoping to increase.
I wasn't going to dose mag figuring my water changes would fix that in a small tank.
My ATO is run by a peristaltic pump and I have two 1.1mL BRS pumps for my two part. I have sodium carbonate and calcium chloride because that was what I was told was needed.
I probably see 3ish gal of evap a week.
Jason,
Here is a link to an article I wrote that might assist. If you read through it, I talk about good ways to achieve stable parameters with Kalk only on a small tank.

Interesting. I really liked the ceramic impeller/bushing design. I will have to see how long they go before/if they lock up. I will report back if and when they do.

I have been running 2 Tunze 6045 powerheads in my 150 for years. During that time, they have been a PIA to maintain and keep running. The impellers constantly lock up and the steel shaft they they spin on just sucks. Recently I had one fail for good when the steel shaft finally broke in half and left part of the shaft in the powerhead itself that I could not get out. Needles to say, it was done.
I decided to buy another one and when I saw the price, I had sticker shock (again).
While on the Amazon page, I saw other options and one of the was this Jebao PP-8 Wavemaker\Powerhead with Controller. The price was only $54.98. I was thinking this was probably cheap junk from china but after reading the reviews, they sounded okay.
I decided to buy two PP-8 models and one PP-20 ($75.99) model. I received them in a couple of days and I am blown away. The quality of the construction is great. The design of the impeller is way better than the Tunze and it has a super variable controller that can change the speed, timing, and period of the impeller. The impeller design is what I am most excited about. There is not rod running through the impeller to get corroded or have junk build up on. The impeller is part of ceramic shaft that rides in two ceramic receptacles on each end. Lots easier to clean and maintain. The powerhead itself is so nice. Easy to take apart, all joints have rubber mounts. These things are so cool and so cheap. Programming the controller is super easy. I have my set for sinusoidal wave patterns at about 80% power. My tank has crazy water flow.
Anyhow, I just thought I would share my new found\inexpensive solution to water movement.

Plan is to let everything grow out. I do have spots for 2 or 3 new corals.
Bruce
I remember when you had your sale. I was just curious if you were filling those spots with other coral, or if you were just letting everything grow bigger.
-
I pulled a ton of coral out when i removed all of the Ricordea from the tank. The Ricordea are just so bad Spread like wild fire and damage my hard coral.
They are all gone now. No Mushrooms, No Ricordea.
I also pulled all the hard coral that grows super fast like orange cap etc.
Thanks,
Bruce
Did you add anything new or did you just remove to allow larger grow out?
-
I haven’t posted any tank pics for a while so here goes.
Thanks for looking ,

"why not?" you said it yourself. You might get an alk swing?
I would rather a pH swing than an alk swing.
Bruce
I don't think .3 is bad. But if I can make it .1 simply by dosing during lights off why not?
-
I do not dose alk and calc separately, but I do dose kalkwasser as my primary means of maintaining my water parameters. I run the kalk doser 24/7.
Here is a link to an article on my dosing setup.

Do you dose throughout the whole day Bruce?
-
I would focus on keeping the alk steady and let the pH swing a bit. My pH runs 8.2 at night and 8.4 during the day. My corals (mostly sps) do not seem to be bothered by the pH swing.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I know the feeling all to well.
Here is a link to an article that describes how I use a kalk stirrer and calc reactor in combination to accomplish what your goals seem to be (i.e. higher pH and stable parameters). I hope it offer some ideas.

Looks great. Super clean.
Need help with kalk stirrer
in General Discussion
I would avoid setting up a Kalk stirrer on your ATO at all cost. This is a very risky practice. Talk with the countless aquarists who have lost all their corals. There are better ways to do this. I would encourage you to read this article. Before you start I would read the entire article.
