    Rbta anemone stretching up

    As shared already:  Be prepared for it to choose to go where it wants, when it wants, including into the powerhead/pump/overflow.

     

    I tended to keep flow moving pretty well over the top of BTAs and attempted to keep them on a pillars of rock.

    Welcome to the Club Dale!

     

    Definitely encourage your peers at AOS conducting research on marine organisms to share insight and gather same here at WAMAS.  As you and your research partner found, enormous amounts of time was saved by having some experienced assistance in the marine keeping basics.  Not to mention access to quality used equipment reducing entry costs extending funds toward actual research materials.

     

    Keep up the great work which has already broke new ground in your field of research.

    For future work on the tank at my home, I'm thinking about installing an auto-top off into the tank system, which can be filled with the water purification system that my father had installed for his projects with clownfish/anemone care.  Any comments with regards to tank care would be very helpful!

    Great write up.  Thank you for sharing your experience and results with the community.

     

    Few thoughts to consider and some of the folks here might contribute suggestions for your summer "maintenance":

    1.  The Tunze auto top off is definitely important to keep the specific gravity/salinity stable for your recovering starfish.  Especially while you and your team are researching in Singapore this summer.

    2.  While it does not appear any of the starfish have been cannibalizing the smaller or "amputated" specimens, I'd gather some suggestions on tank divider options for your main system.

    3.  As you found, feeding the stars triggers frequent bacteria blooms and contributes quite a bit of detritus with such a high population density.  Maybe folks have some suggestions for injured starfish safe clean up crews to assist with the algal based tablet leftovers.

    My apologies Tom.  That was my recommendation to keep the rest of the story together.  I have a bit of insider information on what these two are going to post next ;>)

     

    I think it's absolutely fantastic that you had this chance to do some serious, meaningful research while still in high school. Absolutely fantastic. I hope that it ignites a passion that lasts a lifetime for you. Your mom and dad must be very proud. Say hi to your dad for us. We miss him around here. It was a pleasure seeing you both at the last meeting. 

     

    The AOS program provides and amazing environment for the young adults privileged to attend.  Proud parents, most certainly.  Not to mention how impressive it is to observe the amount of coursework, research, and advanced academics high schoolers are able to conduct.

     

    I'll be around the WAMAS neighborhood a bit more this summer as the "starfish research team" primes the pumps for their Senior year. Great to see you and the WAMAS crew at the last meeting.  Looking forward to the summer and fall gatherings.

    While it has been years since I have been a dime to anyone in this hobby, dropping in to Blue Ribbon Koi this weekend was like I never checked out.

     

    My son has a research project at Loudoun Academy of Science involving marine organisms, so we visit BRK.  Without being asked John hooks the High School Junior up setting his team project off on the right foot.

     

    It is the small things in this hobby that bring in new membership and keeps them in for life.  BRK has that approach down to science.

    I bought mine in April 2004. It will eat krill, large PE mysis, but it really likes Gamma foods lancefish.

     

    It will come out during feeding time for the anemones 1 out of 5 times. I try to feed it directly after lights out at least once a week, but it has gone without be directly fed as long as 6 weeks.

     

    It has been in tanks with the smallest of clowns, but no confirmed or even suspected kills.

     

    Make sure it is not a small miliaris vs melatremus, or you'll be quite surprised. I have had both in my hunt to build out a pair of melatremus. Melatremus key ID characteristic: vertical striping on the eye which tends toward bluish.

     

    Best of luck with yours mine has been an interesting addition to my tanks.

    ..Will there be any issues/aggression between the clowns or will they be ok in the cube?

    Near term anything is possible, long term not a great plan to mix clown pairs in the same tank.

     

    Anemones move, breeding happens, conditions change, all contributing to territory and pairing changes. Best to skip the experiment.

    Bulb Question

    Your friend is right, if he was advising an HQI magnetic ballast to generate the highest PAR, but there is a downside to such a selection: more power consumed, more heat generated, potentially shorter bulb life, etc. Some numbers from Sanjay's testing of Phoenix:

     

    Phoenix HexArc 250W 14000K DE 1 PFO 250W HQI (M80) PAR 88 Watts 325 volts 122 amps 2.85

    Phoenix HexArc 250W 14000K DE 1 Icecap 250W Electronic PAR 73 Watts 250 volts 122 amps 2.3

    Personally, I don't find the HQI ballast trade offs to be worth it for any bulbs other then 150wt.

    fwiw: there are some continuous water change methods out there also, if you have a floor/sump height drain.

    Removing clam from rock

    Assuming it is a Maxima, Crocea, etc., in my experience, you'll want to trim the bysal filaments: extremely carefully. I used very sharp, stainless, scissors when I could, a razor blade when there was not space. Trim closest to the rock.

    Clown behavior

    I have a pair of True percs or oscellaris (can't remember). I guess they are brother and sister because they both came from the same litter. Anyway, they have been getting along fine for about 6 months. Now the female (or maybe just the larger one) has started hosting in the anemone and is beating up on the male (or the smaller one) and won't let it get near the anemone. Is this normal behaviour or do I need to try pairing a different clown up with the one hosting?

    Normal behavior. Let the maturing "female" build dominance and allow the soon to be "male" to fall in line. Adjustments now or in the future are likely to retrigger the process, nature has it all under control at this point. She'll let the male in when she feels comfortable she is in control and the male acknowledges such appropriately.

     

    I would not be surprised to see them both in the anemone a couple hours after the lights go out.

    I would not be surprised to see them both in the anemone during the day after a couple of weeks.

    I would not be surprised if it made the 5 inch jump at the back.

    My female Nigripes clown, appropriately named Cujo, chased my hand out of my 300gal tank. She went nearly straight up, bounced off a raised for service Lumenarc reflector, deflected nearly 3 feet forward, and down 7 feet to the tile floor. Not only did she survive, she continued to lay 500+ eggs every 2 weeks until she died of unrelated causes. She never did learn to accept a "keepers hand" in the tank with her, even 300gal was not enough room :eek:

    It was the standard True Perc from gioNVA's group buy back in April '09.

     

    The larger of the two chased him here and there, but never over the edge. And the other fish don't really pay much attention to the clowns. But you never know! Either way, he was on the floor and is no more.

    April 09 until now is within the range of full maturity/breeding ready for a female. It is not unusual for "her" to ramp up the aggression at such times. A. percula tends to be a bit more aggressive among pairs then most of the A. ocellaris variants(B&W excepted), unless the fish sleeps at the top corner of the tank and got spooked: I would bank on the female chasing the male out of the tank shortly after lights out or at sunrise.

     

    Going to need to cover the gap in the tank if you plan to add a new suitor to the mix, and I would make sure any such suitor is less then 1.5" total length, 1" might even be better if you can risk a small fish in your display tank.

    Came down today and my son noted a missing clownfish. So we went on the hunt. I took a look in the overflow, no luck. Not in the sump either!? There he was. Motionless on the floor behind the tank. Found him a bit too late.

    I can only assume he jumped out the side (which is a good 2 inch jump) and then flopped around to behind the stand. Because jumping out the back would have been about 5 inches or more.

     

    Guess it's time to look for a better canopy and a new partner for my female clown.

    Your "female" likely chased the "male" out of the tank. Without knowing much about the species, age, tank size, etc., I would be quite cautious about adding another clown at this time.
