Question: I am working on the lighting for an acrylic tank. It is 3/4". The tank has 2 openings but I think I need 3 250w bulbs for coverage. I was planning on using 3 LumenBrite minis (I have them now). Do you think its OK to place one over the center brace. It would be about 15" above it. Or am I running a risk by doing that?
TIA - George

Yikes! Ummmm thanks for sharing!

You have some very nice corals (just to state the obvious)
-
Nice. How do you like the reflectors - Lumen Bright minis?

It doesn't like bait n' switch at all - just an honest mistake. That's OK - those things happen. Being upset when someone makes an honest mistake is OK too. I know I would be as well. It prob would have been better to PM Sean about it before posting on a board though.

Thanks - that helped me too!

Just aerate and use - no big deal

This is what I enjoy about WAMAS.....you get to read about a man and his dream.. Good Luck!

I store it in my display tank for months at a time
Just don't let a lot of stuff fall into it

I have a D40 and you can borrow it for a week for a test if you so desire

Thanks David. I am kind of leaning towards the Nikon D40. That guy Ken Rockwell raves about it. He consider it better than more expensive Nikon models until you reach the D90. One of my concerns is the lack of "Live View". It means that you don't use the LCD screen to see what you are about to take a picture of, only to review it afterward. My concern with that is going to be White Balancing, exposure and other options which I don't understand that well. If I cannot see how the options affect the picture until I take the picture, it will probably take me a bunch of tries until I get to a setting that provides the best colors. I am also forced to always use the view finder to focus if I use Manual mode. I just don't have the experience to really tell if "Live View" is that important. It is the compact camera user in me that is concern. The 6MP seems to be plenty to get good pictures, and some of the other features like light compensation and Flash Sync make this camera better in some instances than the more expensive siblings (D40x, D60, etc...)
I can get it refurbish for $375. Then spend the money in a couple more lenses, like a decent 50-200mm and a macro lens. That seems to be the wise thing to do from what I read. The camera bodies become obsolete quite fast, but lenses retain value and usability for a long time. As a matter of fact, from what I read a newbie mistake is to buy an expensive body and match it with a cheap lens.
The pictures I see from Ken Rockwell are fantastic, but there isn't a single one of a coral or a fish. He says this: "My D40 and its included lens is the best camera of which I know for people and family photography." So maybe I am missing some spec that will make the camera better for marine photography. Maybe "Live View" is really important... or maybe once I figure out the White Balance for my tank and lights it is a moot point.

Congratulations. That is quite an accomplishment. Papa.

Wow Just wonderful. Best of luck.

Lucky Man. Congratulations!

That is just a little too cruel. I hate reading posts like yours because it is a too real reminder of the many contingencies that we need to plan for. Best of luck on the rebuild.

Some WAMAS people are pretty flip with negative comments whether they are stating "facts" or their opinion. I think they should be more thoughtful in their postings. I have no problem with MS calling someone out to explain their point of view. I think the MS response is an indication of the perceived harm (actual harm?) that negative off-hand remarks can have.

I am planning on doing a little upgrade from a non-drilled glass 125gal to a used 215 Acrylic tank. The lack of a sand bed and limited aquascaping options led me in this direction. I also hope to move further into SPS with little or no fish addition. I want to use a closed loop for circulation by drilling holes into the aquarium back.
I have thought about using 4x1" outputs and 1 2" input and a Reeflo Dart. I might add a OceansMotion at some point but I would likely start with equal flow to all.
Additional flow would be from the return connected to a 1" sea swirl.
Does anyone have an opinion to layout or plumbing advise, or perhaps a pic of their closed loop?
TIA /George

I bought 2 10K bulbs and one was far to yellow to be 10k.
I didn't go thru the hassle to complain. That eBay vendor was recommended by others as well

That was a great event! Some people really worked their butts off and I tip my hat and raise a beer in thy honor.

Excellent effort. Are you thinking what I'm Thinkin'?- college scholarship!
BTW - it's nice to read about good things on this board. Keep us informed!

I expect to be there and if I can make it I'll bring a large hammer coral to frag as a donation

That is a really nice effort. Thanks for sharing
