Corals and inverts don't get get ich....only fish...(the ich parasite drops off the fish and multiplies in substrate before swimming back out to attach to fish)
-
2c
All my fish go through QT - IMO alternative is insane (dead fish, rip out tank, catch fish, more dead fish, etc.)
Stress in tank environment =>
=>Ich comes. Ich goes.
=>Ich come back more...ich goes...
=>Ich comes back even more... ich goes...fish go also...
A QT tank is not a big deal at all.
Hypo is also not a big deal at all (never once have I had a fish complain)!
Your patience, though, is the deal.
5 weeks to freedom...You can do it!!!
Hypo for 5 weeks at .010 -.012 (get a refractometer and calibrate it) => NO ICH (except for one strain - check with Johnny at BRK).
NOTE: For ich free tank... stick ALL YOUR FISH into QT. Main/Reef tank must remain fallow to break parasite cycle.

Off-topic...
Thanks Dave. Will just do that. AND I forgot that I do have a sea urchin which I like in the tank! Will get it out ASAP.
I read about the harlequins and plan to keep some chocolate stars in the sump. The harlequins are pretty small. Will set up a thread on the results.

Ric,
If the RBTA is a recent division, it should get some time without a clown trying to host it. If I recall from my readings, new splits (aka sliced) anemones need a bit of time to recover or can be damaged by clowns which are agressively trying to host in an anemone.

Yes. I noticed this for my asterina stars and it didn't seem to bother me...until today. :( I tend to enjoy a more naturalistic aquarium with both the "good" and the "bad".
Anyhow, I just got a pair of harlequin shrimp. If results are of note, I will post as I have several hundred stars. Now, that may also mean that once the work is done, these mated (so they seem) pair of harlequins may need new quarters to continue their work as contract killers!

Babies! Nice Phil...

I'll be there...
I don't see anything about starting another frag-growing contest... is that going to happen? I volunteered months ago to run it, if nobody else was going to.

Sounds great! I'll join in...

I know a lot of people use romaine and spinach but to me it seems kind of like feeding bits of chicken to carnivorous fish. It may be almost the same nutritionally but I just feel like stuff that comes from the ocean is probably better off eating other stuff that comes from the ocean. Of course, there are a lot of very old, healthy fish out there that don't seem to be complaining about their terrestrial diet, so what do I know?
Understand your thoughts. Consider that the lettuce is fresh, not dried and process. It holds it's shape and allows a much more natural grazing diet. Normally iour lettuce gets stripped to the nub attached to clip. Does not smell or decompose so if you forget, it can last in there for a couple of days. Fish are healthy. Note, the saltwater permeates the lettuce very quickly. Buy organic to be on the safe side and WASH IT FIRST as nitrates are used in growing medium.
I would recommend trying it and seeing what you think the results are. You might be surprised - and clearly the fish don't seem to be harmed.

Blue/Green Chromis... You see, it not the fish...it the thousands of dollars of support environment!!!
-
Chip,
You add new meaning to the words "thin" and slowing down!!!!

I have hundreds also. As far as corals go, I have noticed that they only bother some small zoa frags when the zoas are small (probably due to their relative size to the frags). As far as algae, they are decimating the coraline from my tank.

High phosphate can cause cyano to bloom. Test for phosphate. If high, use a phosphate remover (rowa, etc. by placing in a high flow area - after reading the instructions as you probably need to wash it first).

Dave,
I'm so sorry you have all that red and purple stuff growing on your live rock... Being a nice guy, I'll give you a SHINY new rock and take that off your hands..
-
Martin,
I don't see any problem? Looks great. Are all those corals from those little stick frags you had about a year and a half ago? Great growth!

Thanks for sharing!

ok i put him in the sump. He was munching on the coral he was on. I found the ID on the crab and it was 100% a gorilla crab. Harry with black tips on its claws. They eat clams, anenomes or anything they can get their hands on
Do they eat aptisia. Majano anemones? Put your aptisia and majano rocks with the crab?

Assuming this is for tangs...
First...avoid nori..it decomposes overnight and begins to REEK!
SO, how do you keep your tangs healthy. Romaine lettuce and spinach (if the tangs eat it). Other lettuce also works. Keeps fresh. Our three tangs go through 2-4 leaves A DAY! That's more than I get. Try it.
(I had read about it...then saw it at flowersellers house...tried it and could not believe it)!

If you need pulsing xenia we can replace your frag if it doesn't grow....
-
Justin,
Looks fantastic.
When you add water, is there any chance the added bouyancy could cause the rock stack to loose stability? It seems that you could add stabalizing bars which are pretty well hidden.

Heck..I agree with all those nominees...who would want their tank shot! Make a huge mess.

Anthony will do a group buy price of $57.50 per book delivered when a box of 10 books is ordered. I have now additionally asked him if he will do a group buy price for "Reef Invertebrates" and also a "buy both for $X". And for a subscription price to his magazine "C". Note: He will also sign each book to each purchasers name.
So, if there is continued interest, let me know.
Since this book is a great educational resource, I do not mind putting together a prepaid (paypal) WAMAS group buy. However, I need at least 10 persons firm commitments when the tally is done.
I am creating a new GROUP BUY thread for this so no more replies on a group buy here....
From Anthony Calfo:
And yes... a group buy is doable indeed. Much obliged for the request, my friend. I have intended to make an offer to clubs but just have been busy with the magazine, etc that PR for the new book has been delayed :p
The printer packs are 10 books per box. For club buys I can offer them for $ 575 and free shipping on the box. (the retail priceis 59.95 and I sell them direcly on the website for 69.95 which includes Fedex sevice).)
I'd be honored to sign any that folks/friends may want as well... just send me a list of names to whom y'all want the books inscribed to.
-
Not sure if there is any interest, but I have sent an email to A. Calfo to see if he can do a group buy discount for WAMAS. I think there is valuable information in the book that will benefit WAMAS members. Book is $69.95 including shipping. Will let you know what the result is.
Is there any interest from WAMAS on this?

I do not have his old book. It was out of print when I started looking for it. This book was supposed to come out in summer and only came in December - hardcover advance ordered copy from the Anthony's publishing venture (www.readingtrees.com). There must be reviews on Amazon or somewhere which would indicate whether it is worth it to upgrade.
A few more vacation snaps

They are called "Christmas Tree" worms. Like feather dusters. I saw a couple on a rock in the first tank at Mr. Coral in Frederick. I am not sure if they were for sale. TONS in Roatan...
