[Important Announcement from The Marine Scene]

To all of our friends and customers,

 

When Tina and I opened the Marine Scene 20 years ago, our goal was to create an outstanding retail and service business providing top quality products and services. I feel very confident in affirming that we did in fact reach those goals.

 

At some point in the future we have plans to retire out of the area. That involves a great deal of planning, especially given the nature of owning this business and the building in which it resides. I have entertained numerous scenarios including the sale of the retail business to an interested party, closing the retail and focusing specifically on service and or shifting to a limited hour’s retail operation.

 

One of the most significant aspects of this entire process is developing a smooth transition and sale of the business to Bobby Haas who has demonstrated incredible loyalty and has effectively become my most trusted confidant. Bobby has earned the right to carry the torch forward and will do so with great results.

 

With the upcoming departure of two full time employees, we have decided that the time is perfect to shift to a new plan of operation. That plan is to become a service oriented business during the week and focus on a limited hour’s retail operation. We will continue to maintain the high standards of quality of product and service we are known for albeit fewer days per week.

 

Effective the week of May 16, 2016 we will shift our retail hours to Fridays from 10 -7 and Saturdays from 10 -6.

 

During this transition you will see some physical changes to the facility as we begin to streamline our inventory and holding systems to facilitate an easier and less labor intensive operation.

 

This transition will allow us to continue to serve our loyal retail clientele with the same level of expertise and quality all the while allowing us to focus on transitioning myself out of the operation. I feel this is a great balance and want to thank you in advance for your continued patronage.

Some exciting new animals in the store this week! In our Tuesday shipment we brought in some Purple Pygmy Anthias, a Sandhopper Blenny (also called the Red Stripe Sand Perch), a Bluefin Watchman Goby, and two Pink and Yellow Cucumbers!

Along with those newbies, today we unloaded a shipment from ORA with some awesome new captive bred fish! Come in to check out the Blood Orange Clown, a mix of the Ocellaris and Maroon clownfish, and the Black Neon Dottyback, the hybrid of the Neon and Springeri dottybacks! We also have  Black Snowflake clowns, Marshal Island Hydnophora frags, two large Deresa clams, and much more!

FEATURED ANIMALS

 

Sandhopper Blenny

Also called the Redspot Sand Perch, these fish are active and can do well in tanks as small as 30 gallons. They're generally non aggressive with other species of fish and are coral safe!

 

 

 

"Stardust People Eater" Palythoas
A cool palythoa with purple colors and covered with light speckles, giving it the "stardusted" look! Brian is in love with this colony and already got a couple polyps from it for his tank!

 

 

 

Pink and Yellow Cucumber
These colorful sea cucumbers stay up on the glass or rock, extending their feeder tentacles to catch small particulates from the water. They like a variety of small foods like oyster feast, cyclo-peez, and particulates left over from general tank feedings.

Purple Pygmy Anthias
A small and bright Anthias that comes in a mix of purple, pink, and golden colors. These anthias can do better in small systems than their relatives like the Lyretail or Bartlett's Anthias

ORA Blood Orange Clownfish
A new fish from ORA! This clownfish is a hybrid of the Ocellaris Clown and the Marroon Clown! It has the large fins of the marroon and a deep orange body with a the bold white stripes of an ocellaris clown.

ORA Black Neon Dottyback
A hybrid of the Neon and Springeri dottybacks, the base coloring of this fish can change from jet black to rust, depending on it's mood and environment.

Something new that made its way to us this week is the Spanish Hogfish. This is a colorful addition to any fish only aquarium. You will need a BIG tank since these guys can grow to be about 16 inches long! We would suggest a tank of at least 180 gallons with ample swimming room.

 

If you want a schooling fish, we have a good selection in stock! Currently available is a cute school of Bangaii Cardinalfish, trio of Lyretail Anthias, and a bunch of very colorful Firefish. The trio of Lyretail Anthias will add a lot of color and movement to your tank, while the Firefish and Cardinalfish will be more stationary schoolers.

 

Lots of wrasse to choose from this week! We got in some McCosker's Wrasse, a very curious and sociable Labouti Wrasse, and Yellow Coris Wrasse just to name a few! The McCosker's Wrasse are great flasher wrasses that do not get very big, so nothing smaller than a 30 gallon tank will be fine for them. The Labouti and Yellow Coris Wrasse should be in tanks of 90 gallons or more.

 

Plenty of invertebrates arrived this week too! Come in and pick up a hungry Skunk Cleaner Shrimp to clean up all of your fish or maybe a gathering of Sexy Shrimp (or both!). Blue Globe Urchins are back in stock as well as Halloween

Hermits! Both of these neat critters are excellent algae eaters so if you are having an issue, why not try one!

Did You Know?

 

Did you know there are plenty of corals available that are good choices for beginners? Some of these corals don't even require intense lighting. Mushrooms and Zoanthid Polyps are very hardy and colorful corals that do well in most marine lighting conditions. Also good options for a beginning "reefers" are Star Polyps, Colt Corals, Xenia, Toadstools, Devils Hands and even some hard corals like Trumpets, Torch and Brain corals. If you are thinking about venturing into the world of reef-keeping consider these corals first and you will probably have a good chance of success. Don't let coral keeping intimidate you, in many cases they are easier to keep than the fish!

When you stop by this weekend, be sure to check out our cubes full of small nano fish! These little guys can be over looked in larger systems but add lots of personality to smaller tanks. Instock currently is an itty bitty Green Banded Goby, a cute Yellow Clown Goby, and a very active Red Headed Goby. Each of them are eating like little pigs and are oh-so-cute!

 

For all of you out there with larger aquariums, we have plenty for you as well! We have lots of Tangs available including some gorgous Powder Blue Tangs. Finally back instock are Midas Blennies! These tangarine colored fish with blue eyes are always a joy to watch because they are active and have so much personality.

 

Sexy Anemone Shrimp are instock as well. We currently have them housed with our small Maxi-Mini Anemones, which they are starting to host in! These little shrimps will be a fine addition to any sized tank and will host in almost any anemone or coral (provided as long as there are no clownfish already hosting in your anemone).

 

Plenty of coral are available and very eager to come home with you! If you have seen the tiny orange Plate Coral in our nano tank by the registars and wanted one of your very own, you are in luck! We have a couple of small orange Plate Corals for sale. They are about one inch in diameter and a very bright orange color. Pearl Coral are available as well with one that is half green and half pearly white! Some of you come in asking for a specific color of these beautiful corals, so if you are not sure which color you like best this way you can have a bit of both!

This includes good and stable water quality, little to no stress, a variety of food and vitamins, and appropriate aquarium size. The candidate must not have a criminal record and may be required to submit to a background check. This is a position for someone that wishes to join an exceptional company with the opportunity for advancement. This is a full time position. Part time may be considered for the right candidate.

 

Retail Sales Associate & Store Technician: This position will assist in all necessary tasks including customer service and sales, in-store aquarium maintenance, livestock care and inventory control. Must have experience with keeping saltwater aquaria. Dependability, self motivated, and the ability to learn quickly is a must. Retail sales experience helpful but not a prerequisite. A clean driving and clean criminal record required.

Live Rock has finally landed in our store! We received some nice Fiji Elk Horn Branch and Fused Branch rock. Very lightweight and nice shapes and sizes.

 

It's Goby central in here this week! Gobies are one of the largest fish families and altough we don't have them all in stock, we have a nice selection. Some Gobies even form a symbiotic relationship with other fish or even shrimp. There are Shrimp Gobies which for a relationship with a Pistol Shrimp where they both live together and protect eachother. There are also Cleaner Gobies in which these smaller Gobies will help remove parasites off the skin, fins, mouth and gills of many larger fish, even ones that could eat them. Currently in stock are Yellow Watchman Gobies, Hi Fin Banded Gobies, Yashia Gobies, Randall's Shrimp Gobies, a Pink Spot and Blue Spot Watchman, Orange-Spotted and Golden Head Sleeper Gobies, a cute little Red Head Goby, Green Clown and Yellow Clown Gobies, Blue Neon and Sharknose Gobies, Engineer Gobies and Bar Gobies. Did You Know?

 

Did you know that it is beneficial to have your powerheads on a wave maker? Creating different cycles with your powerheads allows a more natural current in any aquarium, especially a reef. The ocean does not have one constant direction of flow so having one in your aquarium will not allow the corals to be as happy as they can be. Different movement of water allows the corals to release the oxygen buildup from the microalgae

I've been using a Canon A570IS powershot with the underwater housing on all my dives and it has worked out quite nicely for me. As LCDRDATA mentioned, you can do pretty much everything with it in the housing that you can do out of the housing. And it goes to depths of up to 130 feet. I have not yet used a strobe with it but I'm pretty sure you can. I use it at the store to take our coral pictures as well. I think they're great and compact for fun dives. I've been able to get some awesome shots underwater, feel free to check out my blog to see some pictures I've taken.

Water flow is an important factor for many corals as it helps to carry oxygen to them, brings foods and stimulates animal activity. Of course certain corals prefer high current vs. low current and vice-versa so make sure to do some research and position them appropriately in your aquarium. Good circulation also helps to oxygenate the water and keep slime algae

Finally back in stock are the frozen SFB Brand Saltwater Multipacks! These have been on a long overdue wait as the breeding facility was impacted more than expected due to our irregular weather patterns we had over the winter and spring. So finally production is catching up and we got in our first batch of this great frozen food multipack. Our freezer is stocked with a great variety of frozen foods to satisfy all your fishes appetites. We can help you pick out a great mixture.

 

An ORA (Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums) shipment also arrived. ORA is a large captive breeding facility located in Florida. We get all of our Clownfish, some Dottybacks, Cardinals, Gobies and even some coral and inverts from them. One of the best ways to maximize the health, color, and lifespan of your fish is to feed it an assortment of foods. We recommend feeding your fish at least five different types of food. The same way no human should eat the same meal everyday, fish and invertebrates should not eat just dry food or just brine shrimp. We carry pellets, freeze dried krill, lots of different flake foods, and a large assortment of frozen foods. We have food great for herbivores, omnivores, carnivores, small-mouth eaters, and large-mouth eaters. For the really finicky or picky eaters, we carry a few different vitamin and lipid supplements to make sure that all your fish are as healthy as possible. The best way to expand your fish's lunch menu is to either pick up at least five different types of food, or try one of our frozen variety packs. Did You Know?

 

Did you know that most fish foods do not have sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals? Dry, frozen and even some live foods loose most of their vitamins and minerals thru the packaging process. We carry a variety of food additives to replenish your foods with the vitamins and minerals needed to keep your aquarium fishes healthy and happy. Garlic Power, Zoe, Zoecon, Selcon, AminOmega, Vita-Chem, and Vitamarine-C are a few of the food additives we keep on our shelves. Supplementing your fishes foods with a combination of these additives will help keep them healthy and prevent parasites such as marine Ich. For those of you with Tangs, feeding them with various types of seaweed soaked in vitamin supplements such as the Zoe, Zoecon and Garlic Power should help keep them healthy and gradually bring back its color if it has dulled out. Tangs are extremely susceptible to a condition called Lateral Line Disease and after extended periods of time in captivity their color begins to fade and they may develop a pale line extending from their eyes to their tail. The jury is still out on why exactly this occurs yet we do know that it is nutrition and tank size related. Make sure all your fishies are getting a good nutrition based diet by adding these vitamins and minerals to your feeding regiment. Don't forget many of these food additives are on sale this weekend!

Early this week we got in about 500 pounds of some very nice Indo Live Rock. This is the same type of rock that is in our front 260 display and comes to us from the Jakarta Islands located in the Java Sea. Most pieces have coralline algae growth (purple, pink, and green coralline) and is very porous. There are a wide variety of sizes and shapes so if you are setting up a new tank or just need that

What's New

 

A few fish arrived this week that we haven't had available in a while. First to mention is the Vlamingi Tang. This is just like the beautiful Tang we have in our main reef display. As with most Tangs, the Vlamingi will grow quite large so you need to make sure you have a large tank for this guy with lots of swimming space and provided with a good veggie diet. A beautiful male Vermiculite Wrasse is available and a great addition to a community reef system. Provide this beauty with lots of rockwork and a nice sandy bottom for it to bury themselves at night. A larger Pink Spotted Watchman Goby is ready to go home with you. Check out the pair we have in our new Red Sea MAX display. They are busy working on their little tunnel system in the substrate. Shrimp Gobies and Pistol Shrimp are an interesting addition to any reef aquarium as their symbiosis is quite interesting to watch and it adds some focus to the lower area of your tank. We have a few other neat Shrimp Gobies including the pretty Pink Bar Goby, Yashia and Hi Fin Gobies and Yellow Watchman Gobies. A very cute little Pink Streaked Wrasse is a perfect addition to a small aquarium with peaceful tank mates. These cryptic wrasse are quite shy when first introduced but will soon become more brave as they adjust to their new surroundings. We were sent a couple really neat Filefish that would be great in a fish only system with community fish. These leaf-like fish are typically coral nippers so take care if planning to add to your reef system. Along with those few new additions we have a vast selection of other colorful, interesting and hardy fish to select from. We have swapped out the halides over one of our coral tanks with the new Radion LED units and it looks amazing! Lots of coral fragging has been going on so there are decent size frags at great prices! The new Red Sea Max S500 is up and running and we have added more rock, sand and coral. A nice coral shipment arrived mid-week including some gorgeous Trachyphyllias and Wellsophyllias, neon green Bubbles, lots of nice Frogspawn and Torch, green Long Tentacle Plates, sweet Zoanthids, Aussie Elegance, Blastomussa, Leathers, Mushrooms and some Acropora colonies. Brian and Matt have also been busy fragging up some larger coral colonies to give everyone a chance at that rare or unusual piece of coral. We have plenty of Sunny D's Palythoa frags with 3-5 polyps for $29.99 as opposed to a 1-polyp frag online for $29.99, and Blue Zoa frags with 10+ polyps for $39.99 compared to a 2-polyp frag online for $39.99. Rare orange and green Leptastrea frags are available and going fast. These are similar to the Favia Brain family and are quite hardy and very bright! Aussie Maze, Prism and Reverse Prism Brain frags are also available along with some really sweet Acropora, Montipora, Pocillopora and Psammocora frags. Blue Hippo Tangs are back in stock! We have a couple small and medium sizes available. Male and female Lyretail Anthias and Hoeven's Wrasse are in stock if you are looking for fish pairs. The "Frenzy" will feed a variety of your corals including SPS, Soft Corals, some LPS and even fish! Tisbe pods are best for your refugium and can be un-refrigerated for up to a month. They are also ideas for many coral species as well as Dragonets, Wrasse, Pipefish and many other picky eaters. Make sure you're not only feeding your fish, but your coral too!

Excellent when used in a media reactor, Rowaphos Phosphate Absorbent can be used in freshwater and saltwater aquariums to reduce the main cause of algae problems-phosphates. It acts as an absorbent sponge, removing phosphate caused by decomposing food or overfeeding, bringing the concentration back to a natural level and never releasing the phosphate back into the water. This is the same type of rock we aquascaped our 260-display with. It is very branchy, porous, lightweight, and has some great coralline algae's growing on it.

Exciting News! We have completely broken down the 90-gallon display at the end of one of our aisles and the new RSM S500 is in its place and in the final stages of being assembled. Soon you will be able to see this new amazing system in action up close and personal! There are selected fish and coral available for sale including the very large piece of rock encrusted in red and green Montipora, some Acropora and Meteorshower Favia Brain. There are also some Hammer and Frogspawn colonies, bright green Branching Green Briarium (looks like Star Polyps), a large Zoanthid Rock and some other corals from the display for sale. Back in stock are AlgaGen's Coral Smoothie "Frenzy" and "Oyster Delight". These two foods will feed a variety of your corals including SPS, Soft Corals, some LPS and even fish! AlgaGen ReefPod Copepods are also on our shelves in two different types. Tangerine Pods which can be refrigerated for up to a month. They are ideal for many corals and picky eaters such as Dragonets and Seahorses and even Anthias. Tisbe Copepods are best for your refugium and can be un-refrigerated for up to a month. They are also ideas for many coral species as well as Dragonets, Wrasse, Pipefish and many other picky eaters. We also have the PhycoPure Reef Blend which is a blend of nine strains live microalgae's specifically for filter feeders such as mushrooms, leathers, zoanthids, montipora, feather dusters, tube worms, sponges, gorgonians etc. Make sure you're not only feeding your fish, but your coral too!

Maxi-Mini Anemones are 20% off! These small anemones are quite easy to keep and come in a beautiful rainbow of colors. Related to the Carpet Anemones, these guys stay much smaller and prefer to be placed in the rockwork as opposed to a sand bed. Although the Mini-Maxi's will not host clownfish, they are homes to anemone crabs and shrimp, especially the Sexy Anemone Shrimp. Unlike the aggressive Carpet Anemones, the Mini-Maxi's are not aggressive yet their tentacles are quite sticky so they can pack a powerful sting if something touches it. You can keep multiples in an aquarium and even keep them close to each other creating a really neat rainbow colony. (expires 04/28/12)

After a long wait we finally received a larger Blue Hippo Tang. We also have a couple small Yellow-Belly Hippo Tangs in stock. With all the CITES permits being renewed again, we'll start seeing some fish we haven't seen in a while. But for the time being we have a decent selection and variety of fish for any system. A Blue-Spotted Sharpnose Puffer is in stock along with the cute little Valentine Puffer. A really nice red Fuzzy Dwarf Lion is looking for a good home as well as a beautiful Marine Betta. The new Kent Marine Pro Scraper's are on our shelves. These upgraded scrapers are perfect for cleaning deep aquariums, tight areas and corners, and hard, stubborn algaes. Each size comes with plastic, stainless steel and fabric interchangeable blades and are available with adjustable extensions for those extra deep tanks.

 

We have a new product on the floor to help with your acclimation process. It is a drip acclimation kit which has a valve to regulate drip speed and a convenient hook to hang on the side of the aquarium. Created in house, these acclimation kits are great for any aquarist to have on hand.
