After a five day outage a few years ago, I went with a whole-house Generac -- 15kw, auto cut-over switch, etc that is large enough to run everything including one AC/heater unit. I've never noticed any problem running any appliances, but then again I don't have a plasma so I can't speak to that. We don't have natural gas in the neighborhood, but we already had a 100g propane tank buried in the back yard. This will last us about 50 hours of continuous use, but we've stretched it to last almost a week by running it a few hours at a time to make sure the water stays circulated/skimmed enough and the upstairs stays warm enough. Total cost and installation was just under $5000, but we were putting an addition on the house at the time, so we just rolled it into that cost. As for a shelter for the switch, I'm not sure what you mean, but for us it's just another panel that gets mounted to the wall next to the existing electric panel.
If it makes it any easier, just consider that it is a true capital investment for the house. I'll never have another house without one in a neighborhood with above ground power lines :-)

Cool -- welcome back. I always like to form factor of a cube, especially when you can see from at least three sides. My dream tank is a 4 foot cube (well, only 2 ft tall), in the middle of a dedicate room with a center island that conceals the overflow. Ah, we can all dream, eh? Anyway, the 60g looks really nice -- looking forward to more pics!

Nice! What size tank is that? And what's that in the upper left ocrner? Overflow perhaps?

Planning on at least a DC8 and a DC4 with this buy. But I've got T5 lighting on a 125g (6 feet wide): 3 daylights, and 2 actinics, each on a separate circuit. Would a DC4 be more appropriate for that load (thinking the DC4 would be dedicated to just the lighting), or will a DC8 suffice while providing more sockets to play with? Other things to control would be top off sensors, small pumps, moon lights, etc.

I understand that there are two types of probes available: pH only, or pH/ORP. Sorry to sound like a dummy, but what is ORP?

EDIT (later): Never mind. I see now that it has to do with injecting ozone.
By the way, which of the two threads regarding this GB is the one to sign up with orders (I've got what I want to order :-)? Perhaps the other could be closed to avoid confusion?

... any recommendations for where to get one? Sure, I COULD search Google, but I'm hoping others may help narrow the field down for me. I'm in Annapolis, so local pickup would be fine this side of the beltway. Of course, an online source would be good, too. Other than price, is there anything to watch out for? I'm looking for the AC3 with a DC8 and at least a temp and Ph probes to start with.

Holy smoke, that's a huge tank. I think I missed something -- so where is the sump and engine room? Is it behind the wall that the tank is against? And some more shots of the room and the theater would be nice, too, ya know. What fun is this hobby if you don't venture into a little remodeling :-)

Holy Crap! You said you were building a huge skimmer, but really -- that's just ridiculous. It's worth a tank tour all by itself.
