I would say if your handy look at an anet a8 you put it to gather your self and i have loved mine i have 2 the best part is you build it and then you can make your own upgrades and you can even then make it MUCH bigger best part it is fun to learn as you go

Thanks for the reply! I've actually owned my Ender for 2+ years now. I would love to print more but had twins almost 6 months ago... Paired with my toddler, they complete negate my hobbies! ?

  2. I realize this is a late post and youve likely already purchased a tank, but I'm a big fan of the innovative marine 20 and 25. My 20 gallon all in one (aio) wasbthe easiest thing to maintain. Plus they don't cost an arm and a leg and are easy to look at.

If you're looking for something bigger, water box and innovative marine both make good tank kits (sumps included). Personally, I would recommend keeping your first tank under 50 gallons. That's usually the point where prices escalate quickly and tanks require additional equipment. It'll allow you to sort out your level of commitment to the biz.

That said, I still highly suggest the innovative marine Nuvo 20.

  3. Welcome! Nice tank, cute kid! sounds like you're starting in a great place!

BRS did a head to head regarding the black boxes a while back. They are great cheapo lights but you might find yourself wanting more control pretty quickly down the road.

SB Reef Lights also makes modified black box lights that are supposed to fix the flaws that the others have. https://sbreeflights.com/

And of course there is reefbreeders too.

I have no experience with any of these, just throwing out options for your consideration.

I think something like this will work since it's made from Polythene. Not 100% sure on that.

Rubbermaid (called the slim Jim) makes a similar one but it is a lot less smooth on the inside, might make mixing a bit difficult.

Two of them next to each other would equate to the size of a brute container.

  5. ok after the initial elation subsided....

do i get an inexpensive pump to pump water out of the brute with RO/DI into my second brute and mix the SW in there? That way i can do a smaller amount and it's easier to carry upstairs? or pick up and pour into the 5 gal buckets?

I've always had 2 containers, one for salt and one for fresh. Most will recommend having two the same size. I've always had a smaller tub just for RO (for top offs and emergencies) and mixed salt in my larger tub. I just wyed the output of my RO into both containers with shut off valves to each.

  6. More info is needed. What are your desires for the hobby? What type of fish and coral do you want? What's your budget? Any space constraints?

All of those play important factors in the decision making process.

  7. A friend also recommended these to me.

So far, seems like people like them.

I looked into these myself for a bit. While a great suggestion on the affordability front, I think that goes against his desire for a simple design that can be manually adjusted on the fixture.

My vote would be either SBReef, Ocean Revive T247, or ReefBreeder. All three are affordable, proven, and manually adjustable.

  8. I grew sps, lps, and softies under a POS oddysea halide T5 combo 6 or 7 years ago... Even had a clam! Surely the corallife fixture can't be worse than that. I say, use premium bulbs and you should be alright. Obviously won't be the most efficient but I think it'd work for a while until you do your research and save up for the premium lighting.

  9. ^ I agree, since it's a smaller tank, though it is already wet.

Is that Fiji you went to? Not to detail a build thread but I spent 32 years of without seeing much of the Pacific ocean.... Then I got stationed on Guam. My life will forever be changed. The Pacific Ocean is unbelievably amazing, I've been all over the Atlantic but it just doesn't compare.
