  1. I'd definitely be interested in some hammers Milton. I have a new tank I'm setting up and it would be fun to have a colony to add.

Have not taken it out of the crate. Very eager to do so and get it all plumbed but really really strapped for time with the kids and several new hurdles we’ve hit as a family. Just letting the biome build in tank a few different ways and taking the opportunity to do things VERY slowly and exercise patience to do things right the first time hopefully.
Wow what a project! Any updates?

  3. Hey everyone,

I'm buying @bk_markets tank and need help moving it from Arlington to Kensington/Rockville area. Can anyone volunteer to help on either side of the move?

I also need the suction cups from the club picked up from Leesburg if anyone would be coming from there to Arlington.

Thanks in advance! Pizza, Beer (or other tank related favors in the future) provided!

Would also really appreciate help with setting up the plumbing on my end.

Aiming to do this likely next weekend, but this weekend we're home too if anyone can help.

A lot of them are available for fish or other animals OTC. My microscope isn't the best, and I'm pretty sure my husband would lose his mind if I started growing petri dishes of cultures... So I'm stuck trying to diagnose by symptoms.

This book has been incredibly useful trying to align symptoms to possible bacterial infections. Unfortunately, it focuses on more SPS-related issues - there is very little for LPS and softies.

I'm trying to document my findings as well as possible, but it all just takes time (a LOT of it).

Don't you let him stop you. Petri dish away! Maybe you'll be the next author of coral diseases for LPS and softies. :) What kind of microscope do you need? WAMAS members could pitch in!

Aw, thank you!  Eh, with the huge name shake-up in the last few years, I've lost the bubble on what it probably is now.  Most of what was in "Favia" went to "Dipsastraea."

I use a plethora of antibiotics (about 10 or so, including, metronidazole, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, kanamycin), depending on what I think the root cause is (and that's not to mention anti-fungals and other treatments).  Because of the complexity of what I do (and my complete lack of actual medical training), I do not generally post my protocols (but I will help troubleshoot corals and suggest options for treatment).  You can find a lot of threads discussing cipro use for brown jelly, but this trend really worries me.  Bacterial resistance against cipro evolves fairly easily, and there seems to be a general attitude that cipro cures almost all reef problems.  I believe we'll start to see antibiotic resistance cropping up, and reefkeepers are already very limited in what is available OTC, thus potentially putting us back to square one with treatments.

That's interesting. What are the various antibiotics best for? Do you get them prescribed through an exotics vet?

  7. Most of what I take in are the pieces truly destined for the calcium reactor, like this one.  It was completely browned out, receding, and overall not something marketable by the LFS.  Now, it's stunning, with its glowing green stripes.

This one is GORGEOUS. is it a favia? Can you remind me what antibiotic you use and general instructions? I think you had a post about it, but I've misplaced the link.

  8. Ditto. I'd love to hear how you fought this. I've had pieces die looking like this before and they don't get better obviously without whatever treatment you're applying. Can you give us some pointers on where you get these medications and a basic method to try? Obviously wouldn't blame you if it failed (at our own risk), but I would love to have something to do against these kinds of losses.

  9. You didn't link which light so I can't comment on that, but consider p38 bulbs like Kingbo reef lights on Amazon. I have 4 over my 75. Only thing i would worry about is penetration with a deep tank. But I've kept every kind of coral with those lights. They are about $26 each

  10. Awesome do you have a video? Not sure on fertilization. Some corals do full little baby coral and others need fertilization. I bet if you do a little googling on your variety the info is out there. Coral lab or something similar had a video on this at the mini MACNA, archived online i think

Crazy how much CO2 is produced by burning propane/nat gas, right? Years ago I put a ventless propane space heater in my basement. Within a couple hours my APEX was going nuts with alarms and my pH levels had plummeted. Those ventless heaters should definitely not be installed inside homes in my opinion.
It is crazy! I realized our levels were bad for our health. We don't have a real vent above the stove. I started doing tea in an electric boiler instead, otherwise I was using it 8 times a day or so.

Regarding your thing on gfo... I've never run it before but i have a massive algae problem in my semi fish only system (the angel eats everything so i let xenia go wild....). I am trying to turn it around because angel is going to a new home. I have a reactor that I've never used and I ordered gfo from BRS. Do you think this would be a good thing to do?

  12. If you're having trouble with pH, I would suggest seeing if your pH rises in a bucket of your tank water, outside the house with an air stone. My house is quite tight. I put a fan in the window for an hour or so when it's the morning or overnight and it helps keep the pH up. Especially true if you have a gas stove.

  13. Thanks, yes that's what I primarily used it for and clearly i have way too many nutrients haha.

Can confirm even with careful plucking.... It comes back.

  14. I'm kind of at my wits end with my 75g. It's not my main display and it's a year old. It is also home to a queen angel that eats everything except for gorgonians, mushrooms, and Xenia. So I kind of let the xenia go wild in lieu of other corals. I recently plucked a bunch but of course you can never get all of it, so it's growing back in all the same places. I've also had a new baby recently so maintenance has gone by the wayside and I have green hair algae also. I'm about ready to throw in the towel and take all of the rock out.

    What would you do?

Any success with removing Xenia? Scrubbing after plucking maybe?

Or does anyone want to buy a big Xenia rock?? Will trade for new rock.

  15. I have a beautiful blue or queen angel in my 75g tank and I'm wondering if anyone else has had success with keeping it from eating all the coral? So far the only things it hasn't damaged are mushrooms, gorgonians, gsp, xenia, and a cabbage leather. It's nipped at a hammer but not killed it. Killed a duncan and another toadstool leather, several sps etc.

I'm also wondering if it's time I rehome for space reasons. I love this fish, very entertaining and will come look at you, but I want to keep more coral in that tank. Also have you ever had an angel kill other fish? I didn't see it happen but he was very curious about the watchman goby and then it disappeared. But the pistol shrimp has also lost 2 other watchman, so I'm not sure it's not the culprit.

The angel is 4-5 inches long, very active, but doesn't seem unhappy.

Can anyone tell by the way if it's a queen or blue?

    Thanks,

  16. If you want higher PAR try the KINGBO. I generally get readings around 350-400 near the top of my rocks 4-6 inches below the water, and the lights are about 8" off the water, generally at least 80-150 on the sand, sometimes 40 near the edges of it's reach, which works fine for some of my coral.
