  1. If I turn the power off and on they will sometimes turn the right direction and sometimes the wrong direction. I saw one at a LFS running backwards once as well. It's a pain if you shut them off to feed...you might have to cycle them on and off a couple of times to get them to go the right way.

  2. That's a good point. I paid 50 bucks for 4 pieces of 1/4 glass that I used as baffles in a 40 breeder. Way smaller then those in the add! Oh, and yesterday silicone was like 5.68 a tube at lowes.

  3. Tough call on #1: smaller tank as a frag tank means more room in the sump for skimmer and equipment, bigger tank as frag tank means more room for frags.

#2 If frag tank isn't hooked to DT it's easier to make corrections to chemical levels, and it takes less chemicals, but then again there is more stability in being hooked to a larger system. Mine are separate and I like that setup.

#3 can't think of anything out of the ordinary...

    -return pump for sump

    -heater

-some sort of pump or 2 to make flow in the frag tank

    -light for coral

-light for sump if you have algae or something in there

    -any reactors or dosing equip

    -skimmer

-egg crate and maybe pvc for frag rack

    -plumbing supplies

    -timers/monitors

I hope I'm not just stating the obvious...sorry if I am. Someone want to add some prices or add more to the list? Type of corals kept could make a difference on the amount of light. Prices can vary widely depending on how fancy you want to go. Like you could get a $150 led fixture or a $600 led fixture for example or Vortech pumps vs Jabeo pumps.

  4. I've never owned any of the ATO systems so I can't comment on those. I bought some float switches to monitor 2 sumps and 1 freshwater reservoir, aqua lifters for sump top off and a solenoid valve for the freshwater reservoir. Oh, and a breakout box. So far so good. I want to add more switches for high and low level warnings/alarms.

  5. Start off slow, like have it turn lights on and off first and keep experimenting with adding new things. You'll have a ton of stuff hooked up before you know it!

Connecting to the internet is a lot easier with Fusion, especially for notifications. If you don't have Fusion yet I found that AOL email works for notifications.

  6. Hello from Stafford, VA. My name is Rob and I’ve been actively keeping saltwater tanks for 4 years now. I’ve had freshwater tanks on and off for as long as I can remember. I kept some saltwater fish back in the mid 90’s for a few years but got out of the hobby due to a variety of circumstances.

In 2010 I acquired a 120 that was plumbed with overflows so I jumped back in! I slowly built a reef with some softies and LPS and fish.

After a few years my wife said she knew I wanted a bigger tank and found me one on Craigslist (everybody say what?!) so this past summer I set up a 220 (that I had to drill first) and I sold the 120.

Around this time (actually a few months earlier) I decided to try my hand at SPS so I got a frag tank and set that up so now I have the 220 and the frag.

I want to make sure I have what it takes to keep SPS alive so I only have frags and with one exception they are all in the frag tank. I also picked up some bryopsis so nothing can leave the frag tank until I feel like it is all gone.

I got an Apex controller for Christmas so I’ve been slowly setting that up, as well as automating my top offs and freshwater production. What a lifesaver that is! I have a couple Vortec pumps on the 220 and I’m concentrating on getting more infrastructure in place. I want to start automatic dosing next. As you can see it's a pretty messy set up but I hope to get it more organized as time goes on

Prior to moving to Virginia I lived most of my life near the ocean, spent 10 years in the Navy and I’m a Pisces…so I figure fishkeeping must be the thing for me to do!  We have a couple of dogs and a bunch of cats and both of us work, so with the fish hobby I don’t have much time for anything else. I hope to learn more from WAMAS and hopefully I can contribute something useful as time goes by!

  7. I had one that would lay around on clusters of zoas. Lots of personality. Love their little "eye lashes" or whatever those things are on the head. (Mine had them real close to the eyes).
