  1. thank you for all the fish we will look into the donations. we can not take the giant turbo snails, for our tank is too small. we will definitely look into the yellow tang.

  2. Our fish tank is getting lonely, and there is a lot of algae on the tank walls. We are starting to miss the life in our fish tank. The lack of fish is what we think is causing the algae. Before we lost all our fish it

was fun to go to the  fish tank and look at their habitat. Now we don't get the excitement of going to see our one fish.

We hope this blog will get us some new fishy friends!    :bluefish:

  3. At Emerick the fish tank light is not working. We only have 1 fish still and 2 star fish. The light comes on as we are packing up.We have tried to reset the timer but we think it might  be broken. We hope that over spring break our fish or start fish wont die.Are original fish food has gotten wet and went bad.We are using different fish food and are 1 fish seems to like it and the star fish.

  4. Hello,

I am Matthew from the Emerick fifth grade class. The fish tank we have is awesome. Every week someone gets to clean and feed the fish. It helps us with responsibilities, but we are down to one fish. So...we would like some more fish. PLEASE!!!

  5. in our tank we have big rocks and in these rocks there are little pores with living organisms in them. organisms such as shrimp, enemies anemones, and some others that we can not identify.

  6. FISH TANK REVIEW

There hasn't been very much activity in the fish tank. All that is visible in the tank is swimming cautiously, and carefully. These last two deaths have been the very thing that these three fish have been trying to avoid. As the Serpent Sea Stars stalk their prey, other things have been going on in this tank. A baby starfish died earlier in the year. The Serpent Sea Stars have been hiding in what looks like a game of hide n' seek. As I observed the fish tank once more, I found that these sea stars are actually on the side of the tank. I also viewed a bunch of small, and beautiful shells huddled together in a small group. It would be truly fascinating if one (or both) of the Serpent Sea Stars collected those shells, and placed them in that very spot. As I look back for the last time at the fish tank, I see one of the long, thin tentacles move up very slowly from the sea star. The Yellowtail Damsel is swimming sweetly in the water, the Cinnamon Clownfish is staring through the glass, and the Serpent Sea Stars are still clinging onto the blue, solid tank wall.

  7. In our tank there are different types of wildlife we have our fish, which we talked about in our latest blog, and then we have  Cinnamon Clownfish pair,, Yellowtail damsels, serpent starfish, and various snails. These are all the types of wildlife in our tank.

  8. At the beginning of the year, we started out with 6 fish, but now we only have three. One fish had a tragic death and was eaten by 2 serpent sea stars and another got stuck on the filter and died. It has been a total of three that have disappeared or died recently though. We are wondering  why some of our new fish are having difficulty surviving? We have noticed that some fish are more aggressive than others.

  9. What do yellow tang fish eat?

Do the bumps on the chocolate chip seastar help it do something?

Why are the two yellow tailed damsel fish so aggressive?

How big can chocolate chip seastars get?

Why do the serpent stars hide so much?

Will the hermit crabs eat anything in the tank?

Do some anemone make deadly stings?

Why does the gorgonian sometimes have long spikes and other times does not?

  10. We have not had any casualties in the last few weeks.  We have however, noticed long a long white stringy substance forming on the top edge of the tank.  The Sea urchin has seemed to grab these white strings and they are now stuck to his body.

Our large anemone is moving, it seems to be getting closer to the gorgonian.

  11. We are starting to get worried.  We can't seem to find our seastar.  We also have lost our yellow fox face.  Is there any change that the serpent brittle star could be behind all of this?

    Observations made by students:

The anemones and gorgonian seem to change when the light is off in the tank.

The seastar one day was on top of a snail.  Was he eating it?

The sea urchin has been moving more and more.

Our curious third graders are wondering...

How far can an anemone stretch?

Do the damsel fish live in a tropical coral reef?

What does a serpent star eat?

Why does the serpent star like to hide?

What is the length of the largest serpent star?

How big can a yellow fox face get?

How many different colors and types of serpent stars can we find?

    Are fish color blind?

    Are serpent stars rare?

Does as yellow fox face only live in salt water?

How long does serpent star live?

  13. Hello WAMAS,

I’d like to introduce you to the latest school tank at Emerick Elementary School in Purcellville. This tank used to be at Cedar Lane Elementary in Ashburn, but was moved to Purcellville after crash brought about by a hole in the heater and power outage at the school. A new librarian, new principal, and new aides at the school also brought about the need for a change. Mrs. McKracken, the 3rd grade science teacher at Emerick has eagarly taken over the tank. (plus this tank is now < 1mile from the guy maintaining it!)

    Tank Specs:

    65 gallon 36x18x24

2x 24” T5 lights (looking to upgrade to LED)

    Chambered sump and DIY ATO

    1-2” aragonite sand bottton

Mag 9 return through a (broken) sea swirl

Mag Jet 1200 with prop for intank circulation

    Shockbuster GFCI

    Inhabitants:

    Foxface

    2x Yellow tailed damsels

    hippo tang (coming)

    green chromis (coming)

    royal gramma (coming)

    Inverts:

    Borneman rock anemone

    Chocolate chip starfish

    Brittle  star

    Turbo snails

    tuxedo urchin (coming)

    2 AIPTASIA! (soon leaving!)

    Coral:

    yellow parazooanthid polyps

    GSP  - by ReefeScapes

    Green mushrooms

    purple mushrooms

Green Palys (on island rock!  ;)  )  -  by Fins ans Feathers

    gorgonian

The tank had 2x150W MH lights at the other school but due to heating concerns and the recurring costs of MH lights, I am trying to go in a different direction. Live rock from the previous tank was almost entirely dried to rid mojano anemones that had taken over the tank. Since most of the corals died in the crash, I have reseeded the tank with a mix of live rock and the previous dry rock. A bacteria starter kit was used. The tank also needed a replacement center brace during its time in drydock.

I will continue to update this initial thread with tank updates, but please take the time to answer Mrs McKracken's students questions as they come up.

How can we tell if the sea star is boy or girl?

Are there any poisonous sea stars?

How long can a sea star and anemones live?

If a sea star does not have a brain, how does it move?

How does a sea star eat?

  14. This is our second class at Emerick and we have some questions about our chocolate chip starfish and anemones.

We tried not to duplicate questions.

Where are the eyes on the starfish?

How do the starfish get their bumps?

    What do starfish eat?

    How does a starfish move?

    Does an anemone eat?

How do they reproduce or multiply?

  15. Emerick just recieved our first starfish (chocolate chip)  and anemone.

    Our questions:

How many different colors can starfish be?

    What do starfish eat?

Why does the starfish have  black spikes on top?

How do the starfish fish stick onto the side of the tank?

    What do anemones eat?

How many different types of starfish are there?

    How big can starfish get?

    Are chocolate chip starfish endangered?
